Happy 10th Birthday, Marc by Marc Jacobs!
The Business

Happy 10th Birthday, Marc by Marc Jacobs!

I glossed over this subject in my review of the Marc by Marc Jacobs Fall 2011 show, so let me reiterate. Ten years ago, this label–which we all know so well and love so much–changed fashion and retail forever. Sure, designers had done diffusion and bridge lines before (see Halston, Calvin, Ralph, and Donna), but those were mostly slick, grown-up brands. Marc Jacobs is nothing if not cool. He and business partner Robert Duffy made it okay for arty, hip designers to make money, too.

Marc Jacobs is Hiring A New Twitterer to Replace Robert Duffy…Via Twitter

Marc Jacobs is Hiring A New Twitterer to Replace Robert Duffy…Via Twitter

One of the reasons we, and over 90,000 people follow Marc Jacob’s twitter handle is because his CEO Robert Duffy is behind it. And he’s sometimes quite overshare-y which makes @MarcJacobsIntl very entertaining to follow.

Only Robert Duffy has just announced, via twitter, that he’s tweeted his last tweet (this Valentine’s photo, right, is apparently just that). As for who will replace him? According to twitter, Marc Jacobs is looking to hire “someone to come on and take a job heading our twitter acct and social media.” And don’t bother sending over a cover letter and resume, they’re currently interviewing candidates over twitter by soliciting clever tweets. “Be clever. Smart. Understand our DNA. Say it in one tweet! That is your interview!” it says. They’re serious about it, too, it seems: “I just got in trouble from Robert for being arrogant in my tweets. We are being serious. This is a real opportunity.”

Fashionista 50: The Most Influential People in New York Fashion

Fashionista 50: The Most Influential People in New York Fashion

How do you measure influence?

Is it through website hits? Or sales? Through ad dollars? Or the number of mass retailers who’ve knocked off your work?

The answer is all of the above and none of the above. Influence is an intangible thing that just happens when you know your craft and you work hard at it.

To determine who belongs in the Fashionista 50–our list of the most influential people working in New York fashion–we used our own knowledge of the industry, combined with advice from industry sources. We also considered each candidate’s consumer reach–through sales, media, etc.

To be considered, candidates had to live and work in New York for most of the year.

What’s Fashionista’s definition of influential? It describes people who are shaping the direction of the New York fashion industry, both aesthetically and in terms of how the business works.

You’ll find the entire Fashionista 50 list after the jump. Click on the person’s name to read a full bio. And if you really want to click through the whole slideshow, you can do so here.

Saint Marc: Marc Jacobs and Robert Duffy Fund Provincetown Playground Restoration

Here’s a heartwarming holiday story for ya: Marc Jacobs and business partner Robert Duffy have pledged to donate at least $48,529 to the restoration of a dilapidated playground in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

The renovation will be funded by the sale of $28 “P-town” t-shirts, available now in Marc Jacobs stores. The eight-shirt series features images of the local community center, boats, smiley faces and mermaids, all drawn by local Provincetown children.

Fashion’s Most Influential Twitterers
Fashion Is Fun

Fashion’s Most Influential Twitterers

As fashion month fast approaches, it’s a good time to get your Twitter organized accordingly. Over fashion month, Twitter has increasingly become the best place to get fashion news and updates about shows in real time. And more generally, it’s one of our preferred methods for checking in on our favorite fashion folk and getting news fast.

So we decided to put together a top ten list of the fashion folk who have Twitter down pat. We like making lists. This list is, of course, subjective, but we looked at the number of followers, the frequency with which they tweet, and how much their feeds reflect their personality.

Marc Jacobs To Do Plus Size?

Marc Jacobs To Do Plus Size?

There has been a lot of discussion about plus size on the MarcJacobsInt twitter feed lately. Jacob’s biz partner, chronic over-twitterer Robert Duffy, is back at the helm and for the last couple of days, when he’s not twittering about his Paraguayan husband whom he met online, he’s been talking about Marc Jacobs potentially doing plus size. The latest tweets, posted just half an hour ago, suggest Jacobs will design for plus: “We are in talks now. For plus sizes,” and again, “Listen, we are in the very beginning stages of talking to a partner about plus sizes. Relax. It won’t be based on the collection line.”

We’re hoping twitter speaks the truth. We were encouraged by Saks’ decision to stock plus-size clothing from high fashion brands come fall. If Marc Jacobs does plus it could help change the impossible size zero standards of the industry.

To help catch you up on how these latest tweets, which make Marc Jacobs sound rather committed to doing plus size, came about here’s the whole twistory:

CFDA Awards: Who Won, Who Didn’t and Who Made My Day

Tonight at the CFDA Awards, actor Anthony Mackie said that the event really is like the Oscars of fashion. As one of the few people in the crowd who has attended both ceremonies, he should know.

And it did seem like an abbreviated, less-hokey Academy Awards.

There were skits–Diddy starred in a short that introduced the menswear nominees–celebrity presenters–Isabella Rossellini, Jessica Biel–and even some heartfelt speeches.

Stay-tuned tomorrow for our round-up of the evening’s best-dressed. And now, the winners:
