Take Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s Version of the Proust Questionnaire

It’s Sunday, and raining very hard here in New York. We suggest spending the day reading the latest issue of Lula, guest-edited by Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy. If you can’t get to the newsstand just now, at least take this questionnaire, dreamed up by the sisters years ago when Kate’s best friend Autumn “started dating a new new guy that I thought we should know more about.” In Lula, everyone from Cindy Sherman to Jason Schwartzman succumbed. Here’s your chance:

Former Rodarte Trainees McTega Make a Splash at New York Fashion Week

Former Rodarte Trainees McTega Make a Splash at New York Fashion Week

The California fashion scene isn’t huge, so it makes sense that one of the sunshine state’s more promising new labels has its roots in Rodarte, the undisputed granddaddy of LA-based fashion. Sarah McLellan and Kristina Ortega met as interns to the Mulleavey sisters, and with no formal training under their belts, started McTega in 2006. The line of resin jewelry quickly drew a following with its attention grabbing pieces: knuckle-sized rings with stalactite-like drops, candy-colored necklaces formed as giant rock crystals, and freeform bangles in a mesmerizing transparent rainbow palette. A piece in WWD led to an order from Barneys, but then the recession hit and, like most struggling lines, McTega lost their momentum.

Luckily for us, the girls kept playing and perfecting their resin-melting methods in the chem lab they built in Monterrey Park, CA. At Wednesday’s presentation, held at a small gallery on the Bowery, this season’s pieces intermingled with moss and coral, inside glass terrariums that were frustratingly impermeable to an iPhone camera’s flash but admittedly cool.

LVMH Might Buy Rodarte
The Business

LVMH Might Buy Rodarte

Late August means acquisition time in luxury conglomerate land, so we’re not surprised to hear that LVMH has been chatting up Rodarte, as WWD reported this morning.

The article stressed that no deal has been made, but that LVMH is still very interested in the Los Angeles-based fashion label, which has yet to turn a profit.

While LVMH has stayed away from fashion acquisitions over the last couple of years–the company has been more interested in buying yachts and such–it did scoop up 49% of ethical clothing brand Edun in late 2009.

WWD suggests that the purchase of Edun shares was simply a symbolic one driven by founder Bono’s fame. However, we hear otherwise.

What One Little Fashion Blogger Can Do: M·A·C Pulls Plug on M·A·C Rodarte Makeup Collection

What One Little Fashion Blogger Can Do: M·A·C Pulls Plug on M·A·C Rodarte Makeup Collection

M·A·C announced yesterday afternoon that they will not ship their M·A·C Rodarte Makeup Collection “out of Respect for women and girls of Juárez and their families.” The cosmetics company will uphold their commitment to donate all of their projected profits from the collection to benefit the women of Juarez, and added that they are conducting due diligence to ensure that the organizations that receive donations have “a proven record of directly supporting the women and girls of Juarez.”

The statement continues: “M·A·C and Rodarte are deeply and sincerely sorry and we apologize to everyone we offended. We have listened very closely to the feedback of concerned global citizens. We are doing our very best to right this wrong. The essence of M·A·C is to give back and care for the community and Rodarte is committed to using creativity for positive social change. We are grateful for the opportunity to use what we have learned to raise awareness on this important issue. ”

Of course, this big decision, which likely cost M·A·C a pretty penny (including dollars spent by M·A·C and Rodarte on damage control), can be traced back to a single blog post written on July 15th by Jessica Wakeman at the Frisky. “MAC/Rodarte Makeup Collaboration Names Nail Polish After Impoverished, Murdered Women,” read Wakeman’s headline.
