Buyers From Saks and Other Major Retailers Name Dior and Galliano Among the Best Collections From Paris

In today’s WWD, the trade paper polled the buyers for the world’s major department stores for their thoughts on Paris Fashion Week. What were their favorite collections and what trends stood out?

McQueen, Lanvin, Celine, and Balenciaga was the resounding chorus. Several top buyers named Dior and Galliano among their favorite collections, which is interesting to note, because they’ll presumably be buying pieces from the collections for their stores.

Black Friday Sales We Might Actually Leave the House For

I’m not exactly writhing in anticipation over Black Friday. Personally, the combination of waking up early, crowds, tourists and waiting in line makes me want to die. I could barely handle Fashion’s Night Out and that was at night, with alcohol. I mean, sure a DVD player for 90% off sounds awesome, but I don’t think I’ll ever stand in a line at four in the morning and risk physical injury for one. However, 50% off Alexander Wang might make me reconsider. So, here are a few Black Friday sales that might actually be worth checking out.

Fashion News Roundup: Clothes Made of Giant Rats, Hells Angels v. Alexander McQueen Settles, and GQ Has Even More Inappropriate Glee Footage

Rat Fashion Show? Leave it to Bushwick to host a fashion show featuring clothes made from Nutria: giant rodents that are actually OK to kill because they are destroying Louisiana’s wetlands. Southern designer Billy Reid has also made garments out of Nutria, spurring a Guardian article earlier this year. Will Nutria be the next big trend? We’re not too keen on the idea of wearing rodents but maybe that’s just us. {Daily Intel}

Oh, Hell No: If you bought an Alexander McQueen Hells Angels knuckle ring after seeing it in our roundup, you might have to send it back. The Hells Angels, who sued McQueen, Zappos and Saks over the ring and other products bearing their trademark, have settled on the condition that the defendants stop selling the products AND recall and destroy what has already been sold. Those Hells Angels mean business. {WWD}

Fashion News Roundup: Christopher Bailey Tweets, A Theft At Michael Kors, and The Hunt For The World’s Sexiest Shoe

Theft At Lincoln Center: Apparently there was a theft during the Michael Kors show on Wednesday. A photographer and his assistant, who were sitting in the photographer’s pit, were robbed of their credit cards, cash, and metro cards. Soon after, Hollister reported a significant spike in sales at their Soho location. We kid. {Styleite}

Christopher Bailey Tweets: Creative director at Burberry, Christopher Bailey, has taken over Burberry’s twitter. Up until September 21–the day of the Burberry show–Bailey will be tweeting away about the preparations for the S/S 2011 show. Already up? A picture from his walk to work and a picture from inside the studio. {Twitter}

Sneak Peek: The Zac Sack by Z Spoke

Sneak Peek: The Zac Sack by Z Spoke

Five minutes on the phone with Zac Posen and I’m sold. Sold on the Zac Sack, his new signature bag for the Z Spoke line, sold on his Z-Spoke “Sex Dresses” (we’ll get to that in a moment), and sold on the designer himself. For all his artistry, the former wunderkind is also a salesman. To wit: not only does the Zac Sack strike the perfect balance between uptown lady and downtown grunge gal, Posen declares, it can also make a great in-flight pillow for those tight economy seats. Really.

He may be eccentric, but he’s right about the bag. It’s the perfect size—no Olsen-sized monster or annoyingly tiny clutch for the Z Spoke girl—comes in spot-on colors, and has thoughtful details, like the row of grooves on the underside of its handle to make grasping it on your train commute that much more comfortable. Knowing a man might need assistance in imagining the myriad requirements an ideal bag should fulfill, he hired a female accessories designer (Yaz Buket, an Egyptian princess with a jewelry line at Colette), and used his devoted celebrity following as a testing audience.

“Every actress that came in the studio had to have a go with the prototype,” he told me, which is how Claire Danes, Alexa Chung and Dita von Teese were all spotted carrying the bag even before its release this week at Saks Fifth Avenue. And he credits his experience with Target with giving him the know-how to create a supple leather bag (lined in silk faille, no less) for $525, explaining it was the mega-retailer that taught him to “put what you can do into the product [versus advertising or packaging], and to make the right, intelligent choices.”

Why Saks’ New Designer Plus Size Department is a Good Thing

Why Saks’ New Designer Plus Size Department is a Good Thing

Prepare for a Chanel-inspired stampede. This autumn, Saks Fifth Avenue will become the first major US retailer to stock plus-sized clothing from all of its high fashion brands.

Goods from Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Oscar de la Renta, Valentino, and yes, Chanel, will soon be available up to size 14, with some brands extending to size 20. And rather than being segregated into a different section, plus-sized garments will be displayed on the same rails as straight-sized stock on Saks’ high-end third floor.

It’s astonishing that something so obvious, lucrative and longed-for could take this long. The plus-size clothing sector is worth $27 billion globally, according to data from New York-based buying firm Global Purchasing Group.

That’s partly due to prevailing health trends, but also a result of increasingly arbitrary sizing—the US doesn’t have any clothing size regulations, so a woman who wears a size 8-10 at a mainstream store might find that McQueen thinks she’s a 12 or 14.
