Ferragamo Lets You Customize a Classic

When you think of Ferragamo one of the first things that comes to mind is the Vara. Even if you don’t know its name you know what it looks like–it’s that mid-heeled sensible looking shoe with a stiff grosgrain bow at the top. Everyone from Marilyn Monroe to Margaret Thatcher has worn them. Your grandmother might have worn them, too, and if you were lucky, you stole them from her.

They’re the ultimate in granny chic (hell, I think they’re just plain chic–even though I hate that word) and they turn 35 this year. To celebrate, Ferragamo has launched an innovative new online project called L’Icona. The most compelling part of this project is that for the first time ever, Ferragamo is letting shoppers customize their own Varas.

Fashion News Roundup: Abbey Lee Kershaw May Be in a Spielberg Film, There Are More Details About the Prada/Schiaparelli Met Exhibit, and Angelina Jolie Covers Vogue Turkey

The Other Missing Model: Though we all miss Karlie, many have been surprised this season at the lack of Abbey Lee Kershaw on the runways. Turns out she’s having knee surgery tomorrow (ouch!). The model has been plagued with knee issues for years, and we certainly wish her a speedy recovery. But there’s also a rumor she’s working on the next Spielberg film – something her New York Agency Next Model Management did not confirm or deny. {Frockwriter}

Ferragamo Partners with the Louvre: The Italian brand has announced that it will be the exclusive sponsor of the upcoming exhibit “Saint Anne, Leonardo da Vinci’s Ultimate Masterpiece,” running from March 29 to June 25 at the Louvre. In an historic move, Ferragamo will show Resort on June 12 in the Denon wing, the first time the Louvre has allowed a fashion show within the museum itself. Chairman Ferruccio Ferragamo considers the sponsorship “a great honor.” {WWD}

Angelina’s Face Covers Vogue Turkey: She’s not just a pretty (and hilarious) leg. Jolie looks fantastic on the cover of this month’s Turkish edition of Vogue, reminding everyone that her face is just as worthy of attention as her gams. {ONTD}

Salvatore Ferragamo Fall 2012: The Soldier and The Gypsy
Reviews

Salvatore Ferragamo Fall 2012: The Soldier and The Gypsy

There were two distinct themes at work at Ferragamo’s Fall 2012: the soldier and the gypsy.

Designer Massimiliano Giornetti opened the show with a black military inspired dress coat, with gold buttons and belted at the waist. All sorts of variations of military coats and jackets followed one after another: velvet, wool, fur, brocade, double breasted , some with leather lapels, ranging in color from black, brown and dark green. Most of them were buckled at the waist; some were paired with fitted pencil skirts while others were paired with trousers. In both cases models wore knee-high leather boots– and the pants were tucked into the boots, adding to the military effect.

But then there were the gypsy looks:

Am I the Only One Who Loves Ferragamo’s Old Lady Shoes?

Am I the Only One Who Loves Ferragamo’s Old Lady Shoes?

Ferragamo’s Bruce Weber-shot fall campaign hits today, and I have to say, I kind of love it. Mostly because it’s really absurd. And well, I love Ferragamo. Especially the “old lady shoes.”

Despite some hiccups at the Fall 2010 show–a few of the fabrics looked, well musty–Ferragamo finally seems to have found its footing in women’s ready-to-wear, and these fantastic photos are proof.

But I do have one delicate bone to pick.

Last Night’s Party: Dree Hemingway Sparkles Atop The Standard for Ferragamo

Last Night’s Party: Dree Hemingway Sparkles Atop The Standard for Ferragamo

We fought our way up the (intentionally) graffiti-ed stairs at The Standard last night to stop by Ferragamo’s launch party for their new fragrance at Le Bain, the hotel’s new rooftop bar. It’s the first official fête at the Standard’s latest hot-spot, and the AstroTurf roof was packed with models and socialites.

The model of the evening, was, of course, Dree Hemingway, the face of Ferragamo’s new scent, Attimo. She looked stunning in a shimmering metallic floor-length gown from Ferragamo’s Fall 2010 collection, accented with gold Gaia Repossi jewelry.

Ferragamo’s got a loyal following with a more mature crowd, so they’re hoping Hemingway’s “it-girl” status will rope in a younger clientele.

“I mean, the fact that I like to wear is a good sign, right?” she told us. “It’s just easy to throw on.”

Red Carpet Alert: Rachel Zoe Loved Ferragamo’s Slinky Lurex Dresses

Rachel Zoe was front row and center at several Milan fashion week shows, including Dolce & Gabbana and Roberto Cavalli. But it was at Salvatore Ferragamo that she seemed most enthusiastic, snapping pictures of designer Massimiliano Giornetti’s slinky ’70s-inspired Lurex gowns. (This was Giornetti’s first women’s collection, although he’s been Ferragamo’s menswear designer for sometime.) Read more →

Claudia to YSL and Dolce

It’s official: This season’s trend for established supermodels will trickle into Spring 09, with WWD confirming Claudia Schiffer as the new face of YSL (replacing Naomi) and Dolce (replacing a trio of young things playing GG). Also, she gets to keep her post as the face of Salvatore Ferragamo, but we’re pretty sure she’s definitely Read more →
