Kate Middleton’s Wedding Dress Exhibit at Buckingham Palace Smashes Previous Visitor Records

It was the dress that launched Kate Middleton mania (and a thousand knock-offs). Now, the infamous Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen wedding gown is also responsible for attracting a record-breaking amount of visitors to the Buckingham Palace this summer.

Middleton‘s wedding dress was put on display in late July–and since then, according to People, “more than 600,000 people” have come for a glimpse of the frock, encased in glass at an exhibit at Buckingham.

Are you going to be in the UK this summer? Well, it might be worth making a special trip there. Buckingham Palace is throwing open its doors (for a mere £17.50 per person) until October 3 so that commoners can file by and gawk at Kate Middleton’s wedding finery, from the tiara to the shoes to The Dress. The exhibit is called “The Royal Wedding Dress: A Story of Great British Design.” Tickets are selling out quickly, obviously.

While we showed you every single possible angle of the dress on royal wedding day, the British papers had a sneak peek at the exhibition before it opened yesterday and shared some pictures of the dress and accessories.

Kate Middleton Wears Alexander McQueen in Prince Edward Island (Canada Outfit #9)

Kate Middleton Wears Alexander McQueen in Prince Edward Island (Canada Outfit #9)

Kate Middleton‘s latest getup is a cable knit Alexander McQueen sweater dress with a sailor collar, designed by Sarah Burton. To us, the dress looks obviously inspired by Anne Shirley, the title character in Anne of Green Gables. (Anne often wore sailor collar blouses with her late 19th century floor length skirts.) Of course, we could be reaching. You see, Middleton and her prince are visiting Prince Edward Island–the Anne books take place in a town on the island called Avonlea. But maybe not, especially if Kate was as obsessed with author Lucy Maud Montgomery as we were.

Kate Middleton’s Dress-Making Team at McQueen Thought They Were Working on a Movie Costume

Just because Kate Middleton‘s wedding dress and its designer have been revealed, doesn’t mean it’s time to stop obsessing over it.

There are still so many questions! The foremost being, how in the world was the dress kept a secret?!

There have been rumors of secret meetings behind locked doors, and that the dress was created in pieces.

The latest scoop, reported by Us Weekly, says that the lace-makers were told that they were working on a dress for a British costume drama. Seamstresses at Alexander McQueen also thought that the gown was for a film (no wonder why no one blabbed). All senior staffers at McQueen were instructed to lie if asked whether Burton was the ‘chosen one.’

Report: Kate Middleton and Sarah Burton Collaborated “50/50″ On the Dress

Sarah Burton continued one of the most triumphant weeks in her career with a stop at Saks Fifth Avenue’s flagship in NYC yesterday where she did a meet-and-greet in the McQueen shop there. Despite being told not to ask her about the royal wedding, human nature got the best of people.

One attendee spoke to Burton and told WWD afterward of the conversation, “She said the princess was one of the most lovely women she has ever met and she was really low maintenance. She said the palace called her and the collaboration between her and Kate was 50-50.”

After that, Burton tried to avoid the topic, with mixed success.

Kate Middleton Wears Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen: All the Details About the Dress (Did You Know Her Hips Were Padded?)

As it turns out, all the McQueen rumors were true; Kate Middleton wed today in a stunning long-sleeved creation by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen.

Burton and Middleton worked closely on the design of the dress, referencing English traditions and signatures of the McQueen brand. From the descriptions on the Official Royal Wedding Website, it is obvious that this design made full use of the unbelievable technique and skill of the McQueen atelier.

Of the choice, the official site says:

Miss Middleton chose British brand Alexander McQueen for the beauty of its craftsmanship and its respect for traditional workmanship and the technical construction of clothing. Miss Middleton wished for her dress to combine tradition and modernity with the artistic vision that characterises Alexander McQueen’s work..

The dress is made from hand-cut English lace, French Chantilly lace, and ivory and white satin gazar. The lace appliques were handmade by the Royal School of Needlework using a technique called Carrickmacross that originated in Ireland in the 1820s. The lace workers washed their hands every 30 minutes and replaced their needles every three hours to ensure that the lace remained pure white. The flowers designs in the lace are of actual flowers: rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock.

If you thought Kate Middleton looked curvier than usual, you’d be correct.

Kate Middleton Dress Update: All Signs Point To McQueen

Here they are, the last of the dress rumors before we actually see Kate Middleton in her hysteria-inducing wedding dress:

Someone who people think looks like Sarah Burton, creative director at Alexander McQueen, was snapped outside The Goring hotel where Kate Middleton is staying before her big day. Nice try wearing that hat Sarah! “Like the woman who arrived at the hotel at 3pm, three hours before Kate, Mrs Burton has a slender build, fair skin and favours loose-fitting, cropped blue trousers and flat ballet pumps,” the Daily Mail breathlessly reports. The rumors that Middleton would wed in McQueen started back in March, when London’s Sunday Times reported it and stood by their story despite denials from McQueen.

But wait, there’s more.
