Band of Outsiders Takes on Pitti With a Little Night Music

Band of Outsiders Takes on Pitti With a Little Night Music

FLORENCE–When Scott Sternberg said he was influenced by West Side Story and Singing in the Rain while putting together his Pitti Immagine runway show, I had a feeling there would be some epic musical element to the event, which took place yesterday at sunset on the grounds of an old tobacco factory.

And there was. Not only did it feature music from West Side Story, there were also professional dancers/models who opened and closed the show, launching into it with those famous finger snaps.

Band of Outsiders’ Scott Sternberg Wants to Launch a Handbag Collection

FLORENCE–Despite plenty of groveling at this morning’s press conference, Scott Sternberg wouldn’t tell the Italian journalists desperate to make their 5pm deadline what tonight’s Band of Outsiders runway show would entail. (Apparently some papers require their writers to finish the review regardless of whether or not the show has taken place, just so it can be in print the next day.)

But he did reveal one nugget of information–the company is “actively” looking at launching a handbag collection. While Sternberg does men’s shoes with Sperry Top-Sider (a five-year-long collaboration) and women’s shoes with Manolo Blahnik, he’s yet to delve into carryalls. So get excited: Those of us obsessed with Sternberg’s Whit Stillman-inspired aesthetic will soon have yet another excuse to spend lots of money.

Band of Outsiders Fall 2011: A Runway With Character

Band of Outsiders Fall 2011: A Runway With Character

450 West, the venue where Band of Outsiders staged its first-ever runway show, wasn’t set up like a movie set. But Los Angeles-based designer Scott Sternberg did pull a stunt. At the beginning of the show, with The Doors playing in the background, male models popped out of boxes suspended from the ceiling, crawling down to the runway on thick rope.

This set the stage for a hiking-inspired collection, but what it also did was make the audience ooh and ahh, biting into our lemony Momofuku cookies with the excitement of kids at the cinema. What came next were three separate runway shows. First, Band of Outsiders for men, then Boy for women, then Girl, a lower-priced line also for the ladies.

Fashion News Roundup: Hamish the Curator, Zac Posen to Intern for Martha Stewart and How to Dress Based on Your Sign

Hamish Has a Chanel Dress and Purple Hands: Hamish Bowles, Vogue‘s European Editor at Large and, most recently, curator of the Balenciaga: Spanish Master exhibition, has his own collection of couture as well. His favorites include some of Galliano’s first collection and a 1926 beaded Chanel dress. Now if someone could just tell us why his hands are purple… {NOWNESS}

How to Make It as a Blogger: Want to be the next big style blogger? We think some level of innate style sense is necessary, but if you’re looking for the recipe for style blogging success, now there’s a hilarious flow chart. There are important details, like bangs and nail art and you must choose a “signature pose.” Might we suggest the “stylish squatter?” {Refinery29}

Polaroids Are Still Cool: Band of Outsiders designer Scott Sternberg talks about why he shoots his lookbook with a Polaroid and uses his friends instead of models. It’s not just because of his Godard obsession or that it saves money. It’s because that’s what he sees inside his head. Also, check out some outtakes from shoots with Marisa Tomei, Jason Schwartzman, Michelle Williams and Kirsten Dunst. {The Moment}

Zac Posen Hearts Martha Stewart: Apparently, Zac Posen has a spare six weeks to spend interning for Martha Stewart. He bid on and won the internship last week at the Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai gala. Perhaps he’s planning on releasing a line of housewares? We’re confused. {Racked NY}

He Said/She Said: Dualing Reviews from Band of Outsiders and BOY

Dhani and John both spent yesterday afternoon praising at the church of Sternberg, an experience deserving of more than one review. Here are their takes, starting with Boy:

Dhani’s Review:

After standing in line anxiously for about 20 minutes (behind Tavi and a girl who I thought was her same age but is apparently her agent), I was overrun with anticipation. I walked in to find six or seven girls on risers wearing black sunglasses and Boy’s signature preppy with a twist staples. I was instantly obsessed with a pair of platform wooden espadrilles. I thought I was in for a pretty typical presentation, perhaps with some sort of collegiate theme. That was until I realized how large the room was and suddenly felt like I was in the rain forest.

I turned to my right and saw what looked like a bunch of girls standing in a shower. Indeed, there was the inaugural presentation of Girl, Sternberg’s new lower-priced line for women. The models were being misted with water against dim lighting and a backdrop of windows and trees–which might sound weird, but was actually really beautiful. Out of each setting, this one may have fit the best with the haunting music by composer Thomas Newman, instantly recognizable if you’ve ever seen American Beauty or Six Feet Under. Despite the haze, Girl was really cute. While Boy has always been an interpretation of Band’s menswear, Girl is, fittingly, unmistakably girly. Everything was soft, pale, and drapey.

Michelle Williams is a Boy

Band of Outsiders’ Scott Sternberg just finished shooting his Fall ad campaign. He might be a little behind everyone else but his ads feature Michelle Williams, so who cares. WWD reports the two spent last Thursday holed up in interior designer Paul Fortune’s house with just seven outfit changes, no hair, no make-up and a Read more →
