Street Style Snaps From New York Fashion Week: Day Eight
We’ve reached the end of fashion week–but not the end of street style! Check out what we snapped on day eight.

Some say the age of the personal style blogger is over.
Today, the girl needs more than an outfit, a boyfriend, and a camera. Bloggers need to think about production quality, editorial strategy, and affiliate programs to really gain a foothold on the web. They are more like editors, creating publications worthy of a million-person audience than a few thousand super-fans.
Yet it still comes down that camera. Nine times out of 10, the bloggers who move merchandise, who get people talking, who attract repeat advertisers, love to strike a pose.
So we say the personal style blogger isn’t going anywhere—-in fact, she’s more powerful than ever.
Sea of Shoes’ Jane Aldridge became the subject of heated criticism last week when a Texas Monthly profile on her went viral. Certain quotes (like the one where she says “Why should I go to college?”) and certain anecdotes (like when she expressed her disdain for wearing a Splendid brand t-shirt), especially when taken out of context, had fashion blogs buzzing and commenters crying “mean girl.”
Jane Aldridge first responded to the controversy last week in a blog post, which called out NY Mag’s The Cut specifically for writing an “out-of-context” and “below-the-belt” take on the Texas Monthly profile. Now she’s spoken out again, this time to ABC News of all places.
Get Your Girl Power On: Nearly 15 years later, it is still all about the Spice Girls as a musical based on the group is in the works. Chances are good you’ve picked a favorite and stuck with her (Ginger!) and we put together a guide to recreating those infamous looks. We think it’s high time Union Jack motifs and platform boots made their comeback.
Hip Hop and High Fashion: Rappers and hip hop artists have never shied away from the fashion world, and with recent releases by Kanye West and Nicki Minaj, we’re reminded just how much our favorite MCs love their labels. Naturally, we had to put together a list of our top 10 favorite fashion-related rap lyrics.
Fashion U:Thinking about going to school for a fashion-related major? We did some research and put together our top 10 schools for industry jobs outside of design (think: PR, journalism, marketing, etc.,). Start working on that admissions essay!
ControverSea of Shoes: What started out as a local profile piece has turned into quite a storm over the Sea of Shoes. Blogger Jane Aldridge says the whole thing is “grossly exaggerated” and in need of serious fact-checking, but the author of the original profile is standing up for his piece.
The fashion blogosphere blew up yesterday after an article that Jason Sheeler wrote about Sea of Shoes blogger Jane Aldridge for Texas Monthly started getting circulated online. The piece was a lenghty profile, published after Sheeler spent four weeks with Jane and her family, in which he doubtless amassing a lot of quotes and anecdotes. Well, some of Jane’s quotes, most notably this one:
“Why should I go to college? I’m already doing what I want.
prompted a lot of online discussion, much of it not so nice. Jane fired off a rebuttal yesterday, alleging that the college quote was “blatantly made up” and the Texas Monthly article in general was “for the most part extremely flattering, but grossly exaggerated and highly stylized.” She also blasted The Cut for taking quotes out of context and for writing about her little sister, Carol.
In a post on the Texas Monthly blog today, Sheeler weighs in to pretty eloquently defends both himself and his magazine, faulting the blogosphere for their part in creating what he’s calling a “tragicomic tempest.” He also sticks up for Jane and her family…
Jane Aldridge, of the popular style blog Sea of Shoes, just scored a lengthy profile in Texas Monthly written by Jason Sheeler, and it’s earned her some negative attention. The article starts out with an interaction between Jane and Sheeler in which he is marveling at (and handling) a Miu Miu glitter bootie: “Hello! I’m Read more →
Fashion industry trade shows can often be an overwhelming and tedious experience for attendees who must navigate through a thousand plus booths of designers, hawking their latest creations. This year, WWDMagic, the Las Vegas-based show, has partnered with Teen Vogue to bring the event to a much, much bigger audience.
They’ve invited 30 bloggers–including Jane Aldridge of Sea of Shoes and Erica Domesek of P.S. I Made This along with a slew of up-and-comers–to participate in panels, trend reporting, video segments, and competitions as part of a Blogger Concourse Lounge during the three day show (February, 14 – 16, 2011). Teen Vogue will also use the lounge to promote the launch of their personal style blogger network Fashion Click. (Lucky, by the way, is also launching its own blog network.)
Much like Tumblr’s own coverage of NYFW, coverage of the bloggers’ trip will be aggregated to one page: Wwdmagic.tumblr.com.
Last week we told you about a mysterious blogger photo shoot involving Jane Aldridge, with Garance Dore serving as the photographer. The Sea of Shoes star wouldn’t reveal more than those two details, but we’ve done some digging to get the scoop.
According to our sources, Aldridge was seen shooting at the Christian Louboutin boutique in New York’s Meatpacking District, and that the film permit said Glamour magazine.
So, contrary to what we originally assumed, this might have been an actual editorial photo shoot. Or it could be the second promotional shoot Dore’s done for Glamour. Last year, it was a fantastic street style spread that ran as an advert in the magazine.
I’ve never been one to consistently follow another person’s life. I don’t have a TV, so I can’t indulge in reality shows like The City, and most personal style blogs interest me for a minute until I get bored and move on.
However, I have one exception, and that is Sea of Shoes. Whether it’s because of Jane‘s enviable shoe collection, or her quirky obsession with bugs, I find myself intrigued by her life. So, I think it’s safe to say, I’m a fan. A big one.
Earlier this year we dubbed Jane Aldridge from Sea of Shoes one of the most influential style bloggers.
Now, in addition to blogger and (sometimes) designer, Jane is taking on a new role: Art critic. Jane has come up with a contest, asking readers to choose their favorite look from Spring 2011 and create a sketch inspired by that look. On November 1, Jane will post her 15 favorite submissions and post them on her blog.
With hundreds of entries already pouring in, winning this contest might be a little difficult. Lucky for you, we’ve created some guidelines that will ensure you a spot on the top 15. Take a look.
Sofia for Dior, part deux! Sofia Coppola was spotted in Paris last week filming Natalie Portman and Robert Schwartzman (Apparently Jason has a cute younger brother) for an upcoming Dior campaign. We were obsessed with the last one she directed and this one sounds like it might be even more amazing. {Fashionologie}
Above and Beyond: Anna Dello Russo is launching a fragrance and has released images of the campaign. The fragrance, called “Beyond,” will be held in some kind of gold ornate shoe. We’ll wait until we smell it to start judging. Maybe.{Elle.com}
Moving On: Is Lorenzo Martone rebounding with Lance Bass? Sorry Lance, but we’re going to have to call that a step down. {Gawker}
The Duckies’ bi-bourough living: Duckie Brown designers Daniel Silver and Stephen Cox open up their meatpacking district live/work space as well as their “country home” near Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. They discuss the meatpacking district in the ’80s, their Spring ’11 collection, and how their life is their mood board. {Vevant}
In the suddenly web-obsessed world of fashion, bloggers are some of the industry’s brightest stars. But it’s one group of bloggers–not those of us who report on news, or those tracking trends–who garner the greatest amount of spotlight. Personal style bloggers put themselves out there. Not only do they share their favorite fashions, trends, and Read more →
