Charlotte Ronson To Launch Beauty at Sephora Next Month

As if Sam Ronson’s hard-working sister Charlotte didn’t have enough on her plate (her I Heart Ronson line for JCPenney sells like hotcakes for the mass market, while her own namesake collection is gearing up to debut at Fashion Week in a matter of weeks), the designer darling is ambitiously expanding to beauty as well. With a tagline like ‘effortless beauty, under any spotlight’, the Charlotte Ronson beauty collection will launch in a Sephora near you this September.

This week, a smattering of Hollywood’s hottest It-girls (and, quite conveniently, Ronson’s best gal pals) including Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton, Nicky Hilton, Rashida Jones, Kidada Jones, Mindy Kaling, Monet Mazur, Drea de Matteo and Lake Bell crowded into Il Sole (one of Ronson’s self-declared favorite haunts in L.A.) to fete the new collection and dabble with the pretty eye shadow palettes, shiny lip glosses and face luminizers on display; while simultaneously noshing on decadent plates of burrata, truffle pasta and dover sole. (Sidenote, we also spied Sam Ronson sneakily ordering off the menu in between courses.)

As for the products, Ronson smartly named several of them after the starlets themselves, which will surely boost sales.

Fashion News Roundup: Jean Sweatpants Are Here, a Censored Kate Moss Shirt and a Prada Smartphone

Christian Louboutin Loses Lawsuit Against YSL: Louboutin was denied trademark protection for his signature crimson sole, and The New York Times makes predictions on the aftermath. They’re thinking red soles at Payless. Ouch. {NYT}

Jean Sweatpants Are Here: Just when you thought denim couldn’t sink lower, Diesel comes out with Jogg-Jeans, a line of denim sweatpants in various washes and manners of distress. They have elastic waists. And ankles. America will never be the same. {MTV Style}

Kate Moss Tee Censored: UK website Zazzle was ordered to remove kids tees bearing Moss’ controversial slogan “Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” by the Advertising Standards Authority for fear of inciting eating disorders in children. We have to agree. {Telegraph}

Cool Brit Nail Polish Brand Nails Inc. Is Now Available Stateside

Are you an Anglophilic nail polish lover? If so, this is going to be a really good week for you. Nails Inc., the nail polish brand known for its trendy colors and fun crystallized caps, is finally launching full-on here in the US. In the past, small special edition sets and collections were available at Henri Bendel, but that’s about it.

Thea Green, the founder of Nails Inc., is a former fashion editor at Tatler and started a nail salon chain after being inspired by the concept of the quickie manicure on her frequent trips to the US. At the time, manicures were a luxury item in her country, and UK salons didn’t offer quick versions. Her concept took off, with women flocking in for 15-minute manis. The nail polish line soon followed, then came the English designers looking for bespoke colors for their catwalks. Instant caché.

Ooh! New Nail Art How-To Videos with the Master, Manicurist Sophy Robson

We love Sophy Robson based on her work and her blog alone–hopefully someday we’ll be able to meet her in person and pick her brain for all her nail knowledge. But until then, we can just hang out on Sephora’s website.

The UK-based Robson just did a series of how-to nail art videos, which coincide nicely with the retailer’s recent announcement that they’re going to start offering nail salon services in-store. We are also loving this new trend of actual experts–like Pat McGrath’s collab with Cover Girl–posting videos about how to get certain beauty looks. (Not that we don’t admire the enthusiasm of all those 15-year-olds with YouTube accounts out there.)

Fashionista’s Favorite Beauty Products

We spend a lot of time around the office discussing our favorite items, from shoes to bags to whatever look book happens to be around. Sometimes the best way to find a new product is to have a friend turn you on to it. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up all of our favorite beauty products, in no particular order.

Nars, MAC, and Clinique are popular in our office, and our beauty purchasing is very high/low, ranging from Tom Ford to Neutrogena from the drugstore. And like most women, we have some things to which we’re very loyal, and some that get transitioned in and out.

Click through to see our top picks, and tell us about your beloved products–we’re always looking for ideas.

Shopbop + Sephora = Boring?

Shopbop + Sephora = Boring?

This week online fashion powerhouse Shopbop and beauty retailer Sephora unveiled a new collaboration. They are co-branding an enormous makeup palette, called Color Play 5-in-1: Fashion Edition, which is–as the name suggests–actually five separate palettes. The gist is that you snap out the palette which is appropriate for whatever outfit you’re wearing that day and voila! Coordinating makeup.

I adore both of these companies and shudder to think how much money I’ve spent at both over my lifetime, but this product is a bit of a head-scratcher.

Shopbop pulled together a lookbook of iconic styles (Ali MacGraw as the “Classic Prep,” Twiggy as “London Mod”–you get the idea.) There is a small beauty close-up on each page which shows the coordinating makeup look.

After being distracted by the lovely goods for sale, I started thinking: does the average Shopbop shopper need this color-by-numbers approach to dressing and makeup?

Gift Guide: The Best Beauty Sets To Give And Get This Holiday Season

Gift Guide: The Best Beauty Sets To Give And Get This Holiday Season

We’ve had arguments with people who say that beauty gifts are boring and impersonal. This can be true if you just buy some random fragrance set in a tacky basket at your corner drugstore on Christmas Eve. If, however, you put a bit of thought into it, you can get some gorgeous, thoughtful things.

This year there is an absolute flood of gift sets available at all price points (though we decided not to include a $1,600 fragrance basket we found). So we’ve pulled the best scent, color, and spa sets, with an eye towards originality. They’re guaranteed to get you a kiss under the mistletoe, or at the very least, a delighted squeal. Happy Cyber Monday!

Adventures In Copyright: Lulu Guinness’ Lips Vs. Sephora’s Mouth

Today’s Adventures In Copyright brings us the battle of the big lips. And no, we’re not referring to a botched Botox procedure.

It seems that someone over at Sephora was heavily inspired by one of Lulu Guinness’s iconic red lip clutches . The mega beauty retailer recently released a handbag that’s all too similar to the style Guinness originated years ago.

Woohoo! LVMH Sales Are Up, Like, A Lot
The Business

Woohoo! LVMH Sales Are Up, Like, A Lot

The reason conglomerates exist is so that when one area of the business is slowing, the others are hopefully growing.

For LVMH, 2010 is proving to be a good year for not just a few, but all of its subsidiaries.

Sales over the first half of 2010 totaled €9.1 billion, or about $11.8 billion, a 16% jump from the first half of 2009. Everything from wine and spirits to Louis Vuitton to Sephora to Donna Karan are performing well everywhere from the US to Asia. What’s more, profits were up by a whopping 33% to €1.8 million, or around $2.3 million.

With things looking this good, expect LVMH to do some buying and selling come August. Big luxury brands tend to do the deals at the end of summer–probably because Europe is on vacation, which means less snooping around by the press. So while PPR’s vie for Burberry could be the biggest deal of the year, except something interesting from LVMH, too. Indeed, luxury brands are really killing it this year.
