Fashion News Roundup: Whitney Port Wants Charity, Gwyneth Paltrow Inspired Hugo Boss, and Aggy Deyn Stars in Doc Martens Film

Whitney Port, author/fashion designer/reality star, is looking for a little help from the internet to pay for her show at fashion week. Donating to her includes some interesting rewards like ‘thank you’ tweets. The only problem–well besides the fact that a fashion show ain’t no charity? Whitney Port is supposedly already rich off the $20,000 Read more →

Taylor Tomasi Hill Talks Consulting On (Not Designing!) Sigerson Morrison’s Fall Collection

Taylor Tomasi Hill (or TTH as she’s come to be known) is one of those fashion girls who seems to be doing a million things at once: As the artistic director at Moda Operandi, she is responsible for the shopping site’s editorial content; you probably know her best from looking at any street style blog–where her scarlet hair and standout style make her an easy target; but you might not know that she’s also the creative consultant for Sigerson Morrison shoes. Yep, that’s a lot of (very stylish) hats.

So last evening, at the Bowery Hotel, Sigerson Morrison presented their (vast) fall collection at a party hosted by Tomasi Hill and the Street Peeper’s Phil Oh. And while we overheard TTH tell a fellow editor that she was on a “cleanse day” her enthusiasm for the shoe label overpowered any (probable) faintness she was feeling after a day filled with only juice.

Fashion House Musical Chairs: A Visual Guide
Fashion Is Fun

Fashion House Musical Chairs: A Visual Guide

Usually, it’s editorial shakeups that get us all confused and inspire us to create befuddling charts and guides to recap and (at least attempt to) make sense of movement within the fashion industry. Lately, however, it seems that most of the movement is taking place at big fashion houses. Whether it’s the economy or designers getting burnt-out, it seems like a top level position opens (or gets filled) every week.

From Galliano’s exit from Dior to Marios Schwab’s from Halston (which happened so recently we didn’t have a chance to include it), here’s our little visual guide to the recent ins and outs at major fashion houses.

Label News: Pringle Hires a Balenciaga Designer as Its Creative Director; Sigerson and Morrison Leave Sigerson Morrison

Label News: Pringle Hires a Balenciaga Designer as Its Creative Director; Sigerson and Morrison Leave Sigerson Morrison

There’s been lots of moving around at fashion houses as of late, and this week is no different. First, Pringle announced that it’s bringing on Balenciaga alum Alistair Carr as its new design director.

Carr, who most recently worked directly under Nicolas Ghesquiere, has also done time at Marni, Cacharel, and Chloe. This is a big get for Pringle, and a chance for Carr to make a real name for himself beyond the industry’s core. (He is also a mentor/friend of Fred Butler’s; you can learn quite a bit about him on her blog.) Indeed, Pringle just became a hot London Fashion Week ticket.

Stateside, Sigerson Morrison founders Kari Sigerson and Miranda Morrison have announced that they’re leaving the company.

A Concrete Explanation For Why Our Favorite Runway Looks Don’t Get Made

Okay, so you may not be happy with my choice of shoes (I’m looking at you, Ian!) but I think most of you have experienced what I wrote about earlier. That is, finding something you love on the runway or in a magazine, only to later discover it was never put into production.

Anyways, I mentioned that department store and boutique buyers have something to do with this. If no one puts in orders for these items, they won’t be made. But my very knowledgeable friend Jessica Gold, who runs a fashion business consultancy called JG and Co., has a much more in-depth, educated explanation that I thought I’d share with you:

Why Does the Good Stuff Never Actually Get Produced?

It’s easy to critique American Vogue, but there are things I really admire about the magazine. For instance, Meredith Melling Burke’s Index pages. They accomplish what so many market pages don’t–they tell a compelling story while also legitimately attempting to sell the reader on the items featured. In a recent issue–I think it was July–she offered up a pair of gorgeous red suede Sigerson Morrison kitten heels. They were immediately added to my list of fall Needs.

Problem is, they didn’t get produced.
