First Look: Milly X Sperry Top-Sider Spring 2012 (Plus a Peek at Milly’s Adorable Kids’ Line)

Milly’s cheery spring 2012 collection was full of geometric prints and bold colors in smart, feminine silhouettes and their collaboration with Sperry Top-Sider–new for spring 2012–fits right in with that aesthetic. Michelle Smith said of the collaboration, “I’ve always adored preppy, nautical style, and was thrilled to put the Milly spin on an icon of American fashion. Working with a design team immersed in over 75 years of tradition has been very rewarding.”

While the platforms debuted on the runway last month, we got a peek at the full capsule collection at the designers’ press preview last week. They’re Sperrys like you’ve never seen them before. There is, of course, the classic boat shoe–but in vibrant colors and prints–as well as wedges, sandals and laceless canvas sneakers. There’s even a little “M” charm on each shoe, which I though was a very charming affect.

They’re even offering girls styles–speaking of which, Milly’s children’s line has expanded since last year’s launch and spring 2012 includes some of the cutest kids clothes I’ve ever seen

Band of Outsiders’ Scott Sternberg Wants to Launch a Handbag Collection

FLORENCE–Despite plenty of groveling at this morning’s press conference, Scott Sternberg wouldn’t tell the Italian journalists desperate to make their 5pm deadline what tonight’s Band of Outsiders runway show would entail. (Apparently some papers require their writers to finish the review regardless of whether or not the show has taken place, just so it can be in print the next day.)

But he did reveal one nugget of information–the company is “actively” looking at launching a handbag collection. While Sternberg does men’s shoes with Sperry Top-Sider (a five-year-long collaboration) and women’s shoes with Manolo Blahnik, he’s yet to delve into carryalls. So get excited: Those of us obsessed with Sternberg’s Whit Stillman-inspired aesthetic will soon have yet another excuse to spend lots of money.

Band of Outsiders Fall 2011: A Runway With Character

Band of Outsiders Fall 2011: A Runway With Character

450 West, the venue where Band of Outsiders staged its first-ever runway show, wasn’t set up like a movie set. But Los Angeles-based designer Scott Sternberg did pull a stunt. At the beginning of the show, with The Doors playing in the background, male models popped out of boxes suspended from the ceiling, crawling down to the runway on thick rope.

This set the stage for a hiking-inspired collection, but what it also did was make the audience ooh and ahh, biting into our lemony Momofuku cookies with the excitement of kids at the cinema. What came next were three separate runway shows. First, Band of Outsiders for men, then Boy for women, then Girl, a lower-priced line also for the ladies.
