Fashion News Roundup: Pilati’s Not Leaving YSL, Katie Holmes At MaxMara in Milan, and Chanel and Colette Open a Pop-Up Shop

Pilati Isn’t Going Anywhere: YSL confirmed via Twitter today that the rumor that this would be Stefano Pilati’s last season at YSL is just that–a rumor. “From YSL HQ in Paris… Pilati busy working on the next collection. All the rumors unfounded – he is here to stay,” the tweet read. Rumors always come from somewhere, and this one’s been floating around for a while. But we’ve got to believe YSL, and hope Pilati blows us out of the water with his fall collection next week. {@Y_S_L}

Get a Glimpse of Natalie Portman’s Tutus: Six of the ethereal tutus Portman wore in Black Swan will be on display as part of the exhibit “Rodarte: States of Matter” at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. {Hollywood Reporter}

Kelly Osbourne’s Material Girl Campaign is Here and We Like It: Osbourne is looking good as the new and improved face of Madonna and Lourdes’ line posed against the graffitied walls of grungy New York hot spots like Lit Lounge and Mars Bar. {The Cut}

Lily Cole’s True Passion is for Acting: The flame-haired model says that her days on the catwalk have been a blessing and a curse on her future career as a serious actress. Cole will star in Chekhov’s The Seagull in March at Cambridge University {Vogue UK}

Rumor: What Will Carine Roitfeld Do Next? Launch Harper’s Bazaar in France? Or Head To YSL?

Rumor: What Will Carine Roitfeld Do Next? Launch Harper’s Bazaar in France? Or Head To YSL?

Some interesting gossip has emerged out of the Stefano Pilati-YSL rumor mill.

According to Hint mag, Stefano Pilati is indeed being ousted at YSL and will be replaced by Hedi Slimane (apparently Raf Simons and Olivier Theyskens were considered, as we have suggested before, but were reportedly put off by Pierre Berge’s “control-freakish ways”).

But more interestingly, Hint is reporting that Carine Roitfeld will consult for YSL with Slimane at the helm, if (and this is a big if) she doesn’t launch Harper’s Bazaar in France. Say wha!? It’s kind of surprising to hear Roitfeld’s name linked to another magazine so quickly following her departure from Vogue Paris. After news broke that Roitfeld was leaving the mag, she told Cathy Horyn at the Times that after 10 years as EIC at Vogue Paris she wanted to “do something different.” Staying in the glossy fashion world to launch a rival mag to Vogue Paris doesn’t seem so “different” but could it be true?

Rumor: Stefano Pilati Out at YSL (For Real This Time) So Who Is In? Raf Simons or Hedi Slimane?

Rumor: Stefano Pilati Out at YSL (For Real This Time) So Who Is In? Raf Simons or Hedi Slimane?

We’ve heard this one before: this season will be Stefano Pilati’s last collection for YSL. The latest rumor comes from Kenzo’s twitter (via Racked): “Just heard BIG news about this being a certain designer at an established French house’s last season and being replaced by someone major!! CEO has just left and now the designer replaced by someone who has moved away from fashion design the last couple of yrs but stayed in fashion.”

There’s no question the tweet implicates Stefano Pilati and YSL–YSL’s CEO Valerie Hermann left her post last week. And while previous rumors that Pilati–whose tenure at YSL has been rocky to say the least–was on the outs at YSL were quashed when it was revealed that he’d recently signed a three year contract with the house, perhaps there’s some truth to this latest rumor?

As for who will replace him, our money’s on Raf Simons, or, more in line with Kenzo’s tweet (which have now been taken down, btw), Hedi Slimane.

A brief argument for each:

Fashion News Roundup: Steve Madden Now Controls Betsey Johnson, Rag & Bone Gets Control of Their Graffiti Problem and Pilati Not Done At YSL

Madden’s Control: Steve Madden has increased his stake in Betsey Johnson from a $48.8 million loan to ownership of the brand’s intellectual property. Through licensing deals with Betsey Johnson LLC, Madden will get royalties from Johnson’s firm and its other licensees. {WWD, subscription required}

Calling All Aspiring Muralists: Rag & Bone hopes to solve their newest store’s unwanted graffiti dilemma by taking matters into their own hands. Sick of phrases like “You Would” and “F*** Africa” being tagged on the large white space underneath “Rag & Bone Bids Farewell to Cafe Colonial…,” they will hold a competition where artists can submit their work for consideration. The art will be voted on by Rag & Bone’s Facebook fans and the winner will be provided with all necessary painting materials and a $1000 store credit. Check out their site for more info. {Rag & Bone}

Major Shuffling in Paris?
The rumor mill is running wild following speculation that Stefano Pilati is done at YSL. Apparently, that is untrue, at least for the next 3 years, which is the length of the contract he just signed. There are also rumors that Karl Lagerfeld will retire from Chanel after his 30th anniversary in 2012 and be replaced by Alber Elbaz, whose position at Lanvin will then be filled by Oliver Theyskens. Lagerfeld retiring?? What? {Hint}

YSL Spring 2011: Flamenco Season

YSL Spring 2011: Flamenco Season

PARIS–Stefano Pilati’s reign at Yves Saint Laurent can’t be described as anything else but a roller coaster. Sometimes he’s lauded, at other times mocked.

In a season when other designers have been inspired by his master’s Le Smoking suit, safari jackets, and other ’70s styles, Pilati looked to the archives with flamenco dresses and perfect pants.

YSL Resort: Pretty Poppies
Fashion Shows

YSL Resort: Pretty Poppies

I must admit, I didn’t have the best view at YSL Resort show, which took place at the French consulate uptown.

The models began prancing down the runway at roughly eight minutes after 11am, and I didn’t arrive until a few minutes later, which means I missed a few of the first looks. (While I knew things would start closer to the scheduled time, I didn’t think it would be that close, and neither did plenty of other editors. To be sure, I was standing with greatness–Harriet Mays Powell, Long Nguyen–which made me feel a bit better about the situation.)

But back to the where and why. The French consulate is indeed very French–iron railings, a bit ornate–as were Stefano Pilati’s prim dresses, Bermuda shorts and skirt suits. For better or worse, Pilati’s work is generally all over the place, but this was a moment when his talent shone clearly.

Models Continue To Book Campaigns Over Celebrities

This morning, WWD published a story about models edging out celebrities in fall campaigns. The publication says that European houses have booked more models than celebrities for their recent ads, and that American houses—which tend to favor models over celebrities, anyways—will likely continue in this vein for fall as well. The one exception? Madonna for Read more →
