Kim Kardashian Is Very Naked in the New W

A very naked Kim Kardashian graces the cover of W’s November “Art” issue with the headline “It’s all about me…I mean you..I mean me” strategically covering her bits. Who would have thought the reality star, best known for her butt and twitter following, would figure into Stefano Tonchi’s new “Who, What, When, Where and Why In The World of Style” tagline for the mag?

At a press conference about the revamping of W a couple months ago, Tonchi said he would take the high fashion Conde title beyond the clothes to tell the stories of interesting people. Kim Kardashian might not be interesting to everyone. She’s certainly not of interest, I would think, to W’s readers as a fashion person–her sartorial choices extend to skimpy bikinis and skin tight mini dresses and her design experience is limited to a “collaboration” with Bebe. But I don’t doubt that Lynn Hirschberg’s profile of Kim (out tomorrow) will be interesting. And her naked body will certainly sell magazines.

Fashion News Roundup: Lily Allen’s Vintage Store, MK & A on Ellen and DVF Has a Home Collection

Lily Allen’s New Fashion Career: Allen and her sister Sarah Owen toasted the opening of Lucy in Disguise, the former musician’s new vintage retail venture. When asked why vintage, she responded, “Well a) we love vintage and b) we’re not clothing designers. It’s as simple as that really.” Fair enough. {Elle UK}

MK & A Do TV instead of FW
: Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, who were noticeably absent from NYFW, will be on Ellen today to talk about “this season’s hottest styles.” {Ellen}

Shoe Mecca: Next Thursday, British department store Selfridges will open the largest shoe department in the world. The 4,000+ shoes will include over 30 exclusive styles. And that’s not all. An architect designed 11 individual “apartments” for major labels like Louboutin and Chanel. {Style List}

Gabourey Sits Front Row: Apparently, there was a plus-sized fashion show in New York on Wednesday night. Controversial cover girl Gabourey Sidibe sat front row and former ANTM contestant Toccara Jones walked the runway. {Daily Mail}

We Rank the September Covers

We Rank the September Covers

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that September fashion magazine covers are the most important of the year. With fall just around the bend, September issues are packed to the brim with the newest trends. (They’re also packed with advertisements, essential to a magazine’s survival.)

And if there’s one thing you can say about this year’s September covers, it’s that the good covers are great and the bad ones are truly horrible. Notably absent from the bunch are Vogue Paris and Vogue Italia, whose cover images have not surfaced yet, but are sure not to disappoint.

Click through to see the best and worst of September’s covers!

Who, What, When, Where and Why: Inside the New W With Stefano and Lynn

Today, we had the pleasure of spending lunch at an exclusive preview of the new W magazine lead by Stefano Tonchi. Tonchi walked us through a slideshow of the September issue and even sat down with us at the end for an intimate Q & A.

Also lots of fun was sitting at Lynn Hirschberg’s table, who, in between bites of salmon and sips of iced tea, discussed the aftermath of her infamous M.I.A. article, being an Emmy nominee and how much she liked the upcoming film “Social Network.” We felt super lucky to get to listen to such smart, likable people as Stefano and Lynn, whose obvious passion for W lead us to be very optimistic about the magazine’s future. A breakdown of the session:

Fashion News Roundup: Tonchi Talks, de Havilland on the Mends, Jimmy Choo for Sale

Brand New W: Women’s Wear Daily media reporter Nick Axelrod interviews Stefano Tonchi about W‘s September issue. {WWD}

Terry de Havilland Stages a Comback:
We love this British shoe designer’s disco platforms. So, apparently, does everyone else: de Havilland is relaunching his signature collection, complete with e-commerce. {Vogue UK}

A Time to Sell: It’s August, which means European luxury brands are in buying and selling mode. (They like to do it when everyone is on vacation–it attracts less attention.) The first rumor? Jimmy Choo’s investors want about $670 million to relinquish ownership. {Telegraph UK}

Fashion News Roundup: Don Draper Covers W , Jeremy Scott Does Daytime TV, e.p.t. Launches Pee-Stick Keepsake Cases

Don Draper Covers W: Stefano Tonchi’s first cover as EIC of W is out. Nathaniel Goldberg photographed and Lori Goldstien styled Jon Hamm and Rebecca Hall for the August cover. Hamm’s definitely got that smoldery thing down pat. Should he ever choose to take a break from acting, we’re sure the modeling world would welcome him with open arms. {W}

“And That’s the Stick Mommy Peed On”: Pregnancy test e.p.t has started selling keepsake cases after a recent survey showed that pee sticks were among the top three pregnancy keepsake items. Ew. {MomFinds}

Jeremy Scott, Soap Star: Out-there designer Jeremy Scott is making a foray into the world of daytime drama. He’s guest starring on The Young and the Restless tomorrow, and will be playing, what else, a designer. We’re crossing our fingers he’ll be wearing his own designs. {Elle.com}

Editorial Musical Chairs: A Visual Guide

Editorial Musical Chairs: A Visual Guide

Confused by the major shakeups in fashion publishing? I’ve put together a handy visual–to be updated weekly, or biweekly, depending on movement–to help you find your way.

The Rundown: As I’m sure you all know, Sally Singer left Vogue to become Editor-in-Chief of T: The New York Times Style Magazine and Stefano Tonchi left T to become Editor-in-Chief of W. Florence Kane, formerly a fashion writer at Vogue, has been named senior editor at C California Style Magazine and Patrick O’Connell, formerly Vogue’s director of communications, has left the company. Anne Christensen left her position as T’s fashion director and it will be interesting to see how she is replaced. Bee-Shyuan Chang left T to go to Stylecaster.

W‘s Staff Hearts Stefano Tonchi

Here’s a little good news from the glossies, just for a change pace: W staffers are loving their new boss.

According to sources inside the magazine, Stefano Tonchi is “amazing” and those staying on are thrilled with what’s happening. “We’re being given new responsibilities–overall, the morale has improved exponentially,” says one source.

Anne Christensen Tops T?

Anne Christensen Tops T?

We’ll admit it: The news that Anne Christensen will be taking over for Stefano Tonchi at T is a kind of like a dénouement without the climax. At least as far as fashion publishing dramas go.

While we’re sure Christensen’s a qualified choice for the job–she’s been T’s fashion director for quite some time–the idea that Sally Singer might be taking over the New York Times publication was just….beyond.

There are a lot of things wrong with Vogue (most disconcerting–its covers), but Singer is not one of them. Her intellectual approach to fashion would have brought T to another level.

Marie-Amelie Sauve to W?

Last night, WWD confirmed that both Dennis Freedman, the magazine’s Creative Director, and Camilla Nickerson will leave W in the wake of Stefano Tonchi’s appointment to Editor-in-Chief. Nickerson will go to Vogue, where she worked pre-W up until 2005, and we’re still waiting for word of Alex White’s fate. Under Freedman’s guidance, Nickerson and White Read more →
