Stella McCartney

The British Fashion Council has just announced the nominees for the 2011 British Fashion Awards, which are essentially the U.K.’s answer to our prestigious CFDA’s. The ceremony, which is scheduled for November 28, is meant to recognize the most influential people in fashion today and also promote the growth of British fashion.

With all the attention the U.K. has been getting lately for that stylish princess of theirs and being dubbed the “new fashion capital,” British fashion is definitely more relevant than ever this year. That may be why the BFC has decided to re-introduce the Red Carpet award, which “gives recognition to a British designer who is creating global awareness of their designs in the media.”

From Kim Jones to Stella McCartney to Erdem, here are all the nominees:

Remembering McQueen: A gathering of about 1,000 people took place at St. Paul’s Cathedral to memorialize Alexander McQueen. Speakers at the ceremony included Suzy Menkes and Anna Wintour, who told the story of how she “forgave” Mcqueen for not showing up to a photo shoot. {NY Times}

Gossip at the Tents: The main tent is still up at Lincoln Center, four days after the last show. Perhaps Gossip Girl will follow their next FNO episode with some staged Fashion Week footage. We can only hope. {Racked}

Gaga’s Meat Dress Was a Copycat: Lady Gaga probably thought her VMA meat outfit was one of her most original yet. Not so. According to Ripley’s Believe It or Not: Enter if You Dare! a Chicago girl wore a dress made from salami and bacon. Better luck next time, Gaga. {Refinery 29}

Tim Gunn Hates Everyone, and Doesn’t Hide It: Granted, everything he says is usually spot on. Gunn just shot an episode of Gossip Girl and had some not-so-nice things to say about Taylor Momsen, including: “She was pathetic, she couldn’t remember her lines, and she didn’t even have that many. I thought to myself ‘why are we all being held hostage by this brat?’” {E! Online}

Brad Goreski, on the other hand, had nicer things to say about a former co-worker named Taylor. He spoke of Ms. Jacobson’s split from the company (which happened a really long time ago, but people are still about it): “I hear she’s doing really really well and I think that’s great. I wish her all the luck in the world.” {Hollywood Life}

Obama Gets Bush’s Approval: That would be Michelle Obama, who has the style approval of former first niece Lauren Bush. Bush attended Carolina Herrera’s show and said of Mrs. O, “I think [her sense of style] is great, I think it’s wonderful that she’s supporting young designers I think that’s very cool.” {Daily News}

Crystal Renn’s Today Show Confessions: The fashion world has been in a tizzy over (fomerly?) plus size model Crystal Renn’s apparent weight loss. The model went on the Today Show to dispel and explain. She says those Fashion for Passion photos were retouched to make her look like a size two, that she has been doing a new exercise routine, and that she’s been in recovery from anorexia for seven years. {The Cut}

Kelly Cutrone’s Books Need Their Own Section: Yes, Kelly Cutrone is working on a second book, tentatively titled Yes I Said That. But she doesn’t want this book to end up where her last one did–in the self-help section. “My idea is that there should be a section called ‘Journey’ and when my book comes out in May, I want it to be in [this] new section.” {People Style Watch}

“I used to get embarrassed about the fact I liked fashion. I still get a bit cringy. I’d sit at dinner parties and people would say to me, ‘So what do you do?’ and I’d be like, oh design! When I fill passport forms I put ‘design.’ I don’t say fashion. But don’t get me wrong, I love my job!” Stella McCartney, on her chosen occupation, in the UK’s Observer.

Last week was long, so I was pretty exhausted–and pretty lame–on Friday night. After a quick double date in the city and a stop off at Old Navy to buy my other half some cheap golf clothes, I landed on the couch at 10pm, ready to pass out.

Of course, cable sucked me in–and out of a lovely lull. Pretty Woman, one of my all-time favorite movies, was on. So I decided to commit to watching the entire thing.

What I realized, as Vivian stomped divots at the polo match, was that I had inadvertently replicated her wardrobe in my own closet. Here’s what I found on my own hangers–and around the Internet.

(Sadly, nothing modern comes even close to matching that red dress in beauty or style.)
