The Best Magazine Covers of 2011

The Best Magazine Covers of 2011

Dont judge a book by its cover… Unless it’s a magazine, in which case, sometimes the cover is the deciding factor of whether or not to buy the mag altogether.

The best covers of 2011 returned to a new naturalism and a fun aesthetic, like the Lara Stone T cover we’re still drooling over, pictured at left. Sure, there’s still room for artifice in fashion (see: Stella Tennant on Vogue Italia), but 2011 was a year for reflecting on natural beauties, incredible models, and stellar photography.

After toiling over hundred of covers, we’re bringing you “The Best” according to us. Did we forget your favorite? Let us know in the comments.

Alexa Chung Beats Out Kate Middleton for the British Style Award (Plus the Full List of Winners from the British Fashion Awards)

The results from the British Fashion Awards are in and while there are a lot of familiar names in the winners’ circle, there are some surprises, too. Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen won for Designer of the Year (deservedly so). Alexa Chung took home the British Style award, which normally wouldn’t be so shocking–except this year she was up against Kate Middleton *gasp*. The Model category, made up of industry vets and a relative newcover, was a bit of a wild card. Stella Tennant, looking amazing in a skinny tuxedo, beat out Georgia May Jagger and Kristen McMenamy. Victoria Beckham, now a bona fide fashion designer, had some stiff competition with Burberry, Stella McCartney and Tom Ford for Designer Brand, but she won. Quite an achievement for a former pleather-wearing Spice Girl. Click through for a full list of winners:

Katie Grand, Sarah Burton, Tom Ford Among British Fashion Award Nominees

Katie Grand, Sarah Burton, Tom Ford Among British Fashion Award Nominees

The British Fashion Council has just announced the nominees for the 2011 British Fashion Awards, which are essentially the U.K.’s answer to our prestigious CFDA’s. The ceremony, which is scheduled for November 28, is meant to recognize the most influential people in fashion today and also promote the growth of British fashion.

With all the attention the U.K. has been getting lately for that stylish princess of theirs and being dubbed the “new fashion capital,” British fashion is definitely more relevant than ever this year. That may be why the BFC has decided to re-introduce the Red Carpet award, which “gives recognition to a British designer who is creating global awareness of their designs in the media.”

From Kim Jones to Stella McCartney to Erdem, here are all the nominees:

Fashion News Roundup: Mark Ronson Weds Josephine de la Baume in Style, Scarlett Johansson Channels Bardot, and Anne Hathaway Stuns in New Tod’s Campaign

Kim Who?: Mark Ronson wed Josephine de la Baume this weekend and, unsurprisingly, the duo–clad in a red pinstripe suit and cleavage-baring white gown (respectively)–look unbelievably fashionable. {PopSugar}

Paying Tribute or Shilling Champagne? Scarlett Johansson channels Brigitte Bardot in a Lulu Gainsbourg video for dad Serge Gainsbourg’s song “Bonnie & Clyde,” which features a gorgeous Johansson writhing around in what looks like a bed sheet and drinking champagne–and even features the young starlet’s vocals instead of Bardot’s. While the video is ostensibly a tribute to Gainsbourg, we think it looks a whole lot like an ad for Moet Chandon champagne, for which Johansson is also a spokesperson. {Huffington Post}

Here Is a List of Things that are Bigger than Stella Tennant’s Waist on the Cover of Vogue Italia‘s September Issue

Vogue Italia is certainly no stranger to controversy. Just days after running a feature on “slave” earrings, the magazine has released an image of their September issue cover, featuring Stella Tennant, shot by Steven Meisel. Notice something…amiss with Tennant’s waist?

The magazine reportedly had the model’s waist whittled to a shockingly tiny 13 inches (whether by photoshop or some serious corset-tightening, we don’t know–we’re hoping it’s the former) in honor of early-20th century style icon Ethel Granger, the Daily Mail is reporting.

We’re figuring that, like us, you’ve probably never seen a 13 inch waist in real life, so to give you an idea of just how tiny it is, we’ve put together a helpful list of common objects and how they size up to Tennant’s Vogue Italia waistline:

Here Is Zara’s Fall Collection Modeled by Stella Tennant

Zara’s new fall collection has just been unvelied, and, as always, it’s trickle down of the best trends from the fall runways. The brand’s fall ad campaign stars Stella Tennant, a company fave, showing off the slightly slouchy yet luxe-looking separates. Though the high street staple has been known to take trend interpretation a bit too literally on occasion, this time around Zara did less copycat-ing and more seamless representation of the major trends we’re going to see when the temperatures cool.
There are the standard suit separates done in a masculine style–charcoal wool trousers, nubby sweaters, and a navy and black tuxedo-cut blazer I’m dying over–but also the trendy nod that always carries their clothes from basic to modern; this time, it’s the array of inventive trousers, from orange to yellow to leather to python.

Best Dressed: Valentino’s White Fairy Tale Love Ball

Natalia Vodianova, wearing a red tulle ball gown inspired by Little Red Riding Hood that was especially designed for her by Valentino Garavani, co-hosted last night’s White Fairy Tale Love Ball with the designer and his partner, Giancarlo Giammetti. Anne Hathaway, wearing a white vintage Valentino gown and Stephen Jones hat, was the master of ceremony. The dress code was white, though the hostess always wears red. However, Olivia Palermo wore a Valentino haute couture dress from spring 2009 with a grey tint to it and Caroline Sieber wore a fall 2011 Louis Vuitton look with black shorts. Stella Tennant looked amazing in spring 2011 Chanel couture.

Our 20 Favorite Images from the Self Service Online Archives
Fashion Is Fun

Our 20 Favorite Images from the Self Service Online Archives

Yesterday, Self Service, the hit French fashion magazine with an insider tilt, relaunched its website with full archives. The goal was to create a database of everyone that’s ever been in Self Service. It’s like an online encyclopedia filled with people who are really, really important in the fashion industry. (Seriously, there’s an index.)

Now you know I love a good online archive, so I spent yesterday afternoon scouring Self Service‘s to bring you the most iconic, weirdest, and captivating photos from the book’s 16 year history. While my computer’s hard drive is now 25% covered in images of Hannelore Knuts, I’ve managed to pull out 20 photos that are particularly noteworthy.

But don’t rely on me entirely. After checking out my edit, go to Self Service’s new site and find out for yourself.
