How do you measure influence?
Is it through website hits? Or sales? Through ad dollars? Or the number of mass retailers who’ve knocked off your work?
The answer is all of the above and none of the above. Influence is an intangible thing that just happens when you know your craft and you work hard at it.
To determine who belongs in the Fashionista 50–our list of the most influential people working in New York fashion–we used our own knowledge of the industry, combined with advice from industry sources. We also considered each candidate’s consumer reach–through sales, media, etc.
To be considered, candidates had to live and work in New York for most of the year.
What’s Fashionista’s definition of influential? It describes people who are shaping the direction of the New York fashion industry, both aesthetically and in terms of how the business works.
You’ll find the entire Fashionista 50 list after the jump. Click on the person’s name to read a full bio. And if you really want to click through the whole slideshow, you can do so here.

I’m a sucker for a good weekender bag. There are so many excellent ones out there–from the preppy to the minimalist to the, dare I say, directional. (As directional as a weekender can get.)
Given that it’s a holiday weekend, I’m assuming plenty of you are heading off to a family barbecue, a country cabin, or most likely, the beach. Maybe a combination of all three. I, for one, am writing this on a plane to Chicago. (Yes, American Airlines has Wi-Fi at every altitude!)
One thing’s for sure: Whether you want to spend $10 or $10,000, no one should be without a sturdy, good-looking weekender. Now, for some options:
For some reason whenever we think of chambray that Naughty By Nature song gets stuck in our head.
The point is that chambray is big this summer and we’re happy about it. The chambray work shirt is classic 1930s Americana. It’s sexy and rugged and a staple for the season. And while there’s no messing with a basic like the two-pocket button down, we’re happy to see this lightweight cotton or linen fabric cropping up in different styles.

I spend a good amount of money at Uniqlo, and I’m a huge fan of their designer collaborations. In fact, I still keep a dress from the Alex Wang 2008 collection and a dress from Steven Alan‘s 2009 collection in frequent rotation.
That’s why I had no trouble waking up early this morning to visit design duo Jeffrey Costello and Robert Tagliapietra at Uniqlo‘s SoHo location. Not only did I get a sneak peek of the collection before shoppers got a hold of it at 10am–I also got to spend a bit of money! (And most importantly, chat with the designers.)
And let me tell you–I was highly, highly impressed.

I kind of love Steven Alan everything. And I kind of love canvas tennis shoes, particularly Converse, TOMS and most of all, Keds. So I was elated to find a pair of slip-on Keds–in Steven Alan’s ikat print, no less–on a page in May’s Vogue Index. The shoes, which hit Steven Alan stores–as well as Read more →
