Vogue may have gotten snubbed at last year’s National Magazine awards–but this year the mag took home top honors.

Balenciaga’s fall/winter 2013/2014 campaign broke today on the brand’s website, and with it, we get a first look at new creative director Alexander Wang’s vision for the house.
For its November issue, W is celebrating its 40th anniversary with four special oversized covers–each of which pays tribute to one decade in the magazine’s history.
Shot by Steven Meisel and styled by Edward Enninful, the covers and corresponding editorial feature Rooney Mara, Mia Wasikowska, Scarlett Johansson, and Keira Knightley all made up to look like they just stepped out of the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and Aughts, respectively.
Forgive me for my lack of cultural references, but the best way I can describe last night’s masquerade fête celebrating Lady Gaga’s foray into the fragrance industry is as a Gossip Girl episode brought to life.
It has been a long time never that a fragrance campaign provoked such a strong reaction in me. But leave it to Gaga. Here is the Steven Klein-lensed campaign for Lady Gaga Fame, her new black-but-turns-clear-and-smells-like-belladonna-and-maybe-sperm fragrance. In it, Lady Gaga reclines nude while what appears to be tiny little buff men scramble all over Read more →
Lady Gaga, who has been teasing us with mysterious little soundbites (blood! semen!) about her perfume for over a year now, is finally releasing the damn thing, and this morning we have all the details about what is definitely a unique and innovative fragrance.
While this crowded, yawn-inducing, cutesy-bottle world of celeb fragrances often makes our eyes glaze over, we’re actually excited about this launch. From the fragrance to the bottle to the marketing blitz that’s planned, Gaga has sort of outdone herself on this one.
So here’s everything you need to know, according to a long and meaty profile in WWD today:
We were really excited when we saw how amazingly fierce Tilda Swinton looked all drag queened-out on the cover of Candy Magazine #4. Little did we know that this juicy little gem was lingering within the pages: “Baby Boom,” shot by Steven Klein and styled by Patti Wilson, features bondage-sporting male models making out, playing Read more →
Kate Moss covers the March issue of W magazine, and it’s the most compelling cover we’ve seen in a long time. Shot by Steven Klein and styled by Edward Enniful, the theme is “Good vs. Bad.” Or as Will Self says in the profile of her (which you can read here) “Dark Moss and Light Read more →
In the world of fashion there is a small yet consistent collection of photographers who get the majority of work for major publications and brands. In fact, many of them seem to have quite the monopoly on the fashion world. Legends like Richard Avedon and Irving Penn continued to work prolifically up until the time they passed away, and that seems to be what is so great about being behind the camera instead of in front of it. Top photographers are given the chance to work for years in an industry where most figures are in one day and out the next.
But how do we differentiate one top photographer from another? We’ll show you what to look for from visual style, what publications they regularly appear in, as well as recent ongoing collaborations with brands and models of some of the top working fashion photographers of today. The Identity Of @CondeElevator Remains a Mystery: Lucky editor and Fashionista contributor John Jannuzzi was accused of being the Conde employee behind this week’s Twitter obsession, but let the records show, it’s simply not true! In other Conde Nast elevator news, WWD remembers Gawker’s Elevator Chronicles back in 2003, where employees blogged about their elevator encounters with Anna Wintour. {Lucky and WWD, Subscription Required}
The Revival of Rent Gets a Costume Upgrade: The musical’s original costume designer, Angela Wendt, updated her creations for the new Off-Broadway production by garnering inspiration from designers like Viktor & Rolf. {Styleite}

Madonna’s been pretty tight-lipped about W.E., the movie’s she’s currently directing and co-wrote. The plot has something to do with King Edward VIII’s affair with American socialite Wallis Simpson (they later married), played by James D’Arcy and Abbie Cornish. And Lourdes Leone will be taking a break from blogging to make her acting debut in the film. It’s Madonna’s second time directing, and she told Interview that this film has a “bigger story” and will be “more layered and complicated” than Filth and Wisdom, her directorial debut.
For her second attempt at directing, Madonna is pulling out the big guns. Some exclusive photos sent to us by a tipster show that she’s getting some high profile high fashion help. Looks like famed fashion photog Steven Klein is giving her Madgesty some advice while on set in Brooklyn last week. Of course it’s not the first time Madonna and Klein have worked together. The two paired up for an exhibition back in 2003, and he shot her for several editorials. Hopefully this bodes well for W.E. making a bigger splash than Filth and Wisdom.
A photo leaked today from Lady Gaga‘s Steven Klein directed music video for Alejandro. We had great expectations for the video, but recycling a theme from a magazine editorial was not one of them. There are boys with jet black bowl cuts, a dominant female figure, and a brooding, inscrutable mood. Even stranger is the Read more →
