Hailee Steinfeld, Tavi, Marilyn Manson and More Fete the Launch of Miu Miu’s “Noir” Sunglasses

LOS ANGELES–Last night Miu Miu pulled out all the stops to celebrate the launch of their “Noir” sunglasses collation with an over-the-top ’40s-themed bash at an enormous villa in the Hollywood Hills (apparently they film parts of Entourage there). The brand wrangled so many celebs–from campaign star Hailee Steinfeld (who was joined at the hip to new BFF Tavi Gevinson) to Diane Kruger to Smith Jerrod Jason Lewis to Marilyn Manson (yes, he was really there and he came with China Chow)–it was nearly impossible to avoid bumping into them.

The cat-eye ’40s-style glasses, which debuted on Miu Miu’s fall 2011 runway, were the stars of a short film, Muta, commissioned by the brand. The film, directed by award-winning Argentinian director Lucrecia Martel, premiered last night on a screen suspended in the villa’s grand courtyard. It’s the second installment in the “Miu Miu Women’s Tales Saga,” a film series that explores “the feminine love affair with Miu Miu.” (Watch the first film directed by Zoe Cassavetes here).

Muta is creepy in the best way: models in fall Miu Miu slithered and slinked and occasionally disappeared altogether on a cruise ship–one even contorted to squeeze through a tiny porthole. Only you never saw their faces.

Chanel Does Discreet For Its Latest Prestige Eyewear Collection

You won’t find any glaringly large interlocking C’s on Chanel‘s fall-winter 2011/12 Prestige eyewear collection. Instead, the brand has chosen to identify themselves with subtle emblems.

Pearls, the classic Chanel quilted effect, and a chain theme evocative of the handle on Chanel handbags accent the modern frames.

The oversize, aviator, and cat-eye framed sunglasses, as well as the eyeglasses, are available in muted hues of blue, taupe, and grey–a palette that’s new to the line.

Click through for a look at the range, whose ad campaign stars Claudia Schiffer.

New in Summer Eyewear: Tommy Hilfiger Goes Surfing and Oliver Peoples Throws a BBQ

This week there were two appropriately summery parties to launch the new eyewear collections of two iconic American brands. Tommy Hilfiger celebrated its first foray into eyewear–and its yearlong 25th anniversary–with a party at the James Hotel in NYC and a movie dedicated to surfers. Oliver Peoples hosted an intimate gathering of bloggers who were invited to hang out with founder Larry Leight, try on sunglasses, and eat fancy barbecue.

Did you ever wonder how Oliver Peoples, now owned by Luxottica, got its name?

January Jones Inspires Versace’s New Eyewear Collection Which Features 3D Medusa Heads

Versace is launching a new line of eyewear for spring called January J. The name of the collection is a not so subtle nod to the inspiration behind the line: red carpet Versace devotee January Jones.

Mad Men fan Donatella Versace, who dubbed Jones her next “Versace blond,” worked ’50s and ’60s movie star glamor into the line, which she showcased on her spring runway. It comprises two styles of sunglasses and one style of optical frames. Apparently when you look at these glasses head on “an entire 3D Medusa head is visible, branding the January J collection unmistakably as coming from the house of Versace,” the press release states.

“This campaign is definitely a landmark in our relationship…and one that I hope will last a lifetime,” Jones said in the release.

Check out the collection.

Do $500 Sunglasses Protect Your Eyes Better Than a $5 Pair? Maybe Not.

Do $500 Sunglasses Protect Your Eyes Better Than a $5 Pair? Maybe Not.

I was never a big fan of “designer” sunglasses. But that was before wayfarers suddenly looked fresh again. And Linda Farrow began reissuing vintage classics, as well as teaming up with new, exciting designers like The Row and Alexander Wang. And before I really learned to appreciate Persols. And Supers. And oh, long before Karen Walker.

These days, I’m pretty much a sunglasses whore. I love them. I match them to my outfits. I don’t own as many pairs as I’d like to, and right now I really, really need a pair of big, black cat eyes.

But after my most recent purchase–more than I’ve ever spent on sunnies–I’m feeling a bit anxious. The glasses–as stylish, chic, and lovely as they are–offer no protection. Well, at least they don’t feel like they do. I walk outside and I need to squint behind my sunglasses. I walk inside and I have no need to take them off–I can see perfectly.

This is where my practical side comes in. Why, if these are 50 times more expensive than the pair I bought H&M, do my cheapo sunnies feel like they’re working harder?

I Need, I Want, I Have To Have: Shuron’s “Freeway” Sunglasses (Or Moscot’s “Nebb”…I’m Torn)

I’ve never been a sunglasses person. Not because I always lose them or break them, but they were just never anything I was willing to invest over $10 in. That is until last week.

While shopping my way down Smith Street in Brooklyn in order to beat the heat (the heat is a very good excuse to go shopping), a pair of sunglasses at Epaulet caught my eye: They were black, looked like a cross between cat-eye glasses and wayfarerers, and made by a company called Shuron out of South Carolina. But these frames predate Ray-Ban’s wayfarers. Ray-Ban started making wayfarers in 1952, Shuron has been around since 1865.

I had to know more.

Special Report: Sunglasses

We’re Fashionista. Of course we like sunglasses. But this year, it seems to be the accessory of choice: The Thing everything wants to get their hands on. Who cares if they’re from The Row or Target? As long as they look good, we’re happy. So we’ve rounded up the season’s best. We’ll be following up later today with a few longer features on the world of sunnies, so stay tuned.
