Last night, Superga invited fashion’s best and brightest to celebrate their first-ever American store in SoHo–and they pulled off an impressive feat in the process, getting many of fashion’s die-hard heel-addicts, including the brand’s Creative Directors Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, to ditch their signature stilettos for Superga’s cool and classic sneaks. Hey, anything that gets us closer to wearing comfy shoes at fashion events, we can get behind!
At the event we also had a chance to chat with Steven Madden, who is responsible for bringing the classic Italian brand stateside and who has worked with the Olsens for five years, first on their Elizabeth and James shoe line and now on Superga. Madden is a pioneer–and a character–in the shoe industry and he’s certainly not one to mince words.
When asked what it was like to work with Mary-Kate and Ashley on the twins’ line of shoes for the brand, Madden said with a wry smile, “Painful. Painful.”
Sneakers are having a moment–and not just in wedge form. Classic sneaker brands like Keds, Bensimon, Nike and others are infiltrating the fashion world via collaborations with hip designers, brands, retailers and people.
These collabs have succeeded in doing what collaborations do best–bringing a little more relevance to brands who’ve been around for a while and in many cases opening them up to new audiences. Just yesterday, PF Flyers launched the latest video in their Authentic American Style series, in which NYC fashiony photographer/it girl Rachel Chandler talks about her style and shows us how cool she looks in shoes from the heritage athletic footwear brand, which has been around since the ’30s. The day before that, J. Crew and Madewell debuted their latest casual sneaker collabs with Soludos and Bensimon, respectively, in cute, springy colors.
Kate Middleton Receives Two Unusual Honors: The Duchess of Cambridge has gotten a lot of attention for her sartorial choices, so it can’t be too much of a surprise that she is being awarded for it. What is somewhat unusual is the source: The Headwear Association has named Kate their “Hat Person of the Year.” (Seriously, that exists.) The Duchess also made the cover of Scouting magazine, who has dubbed her “The Royal Role Model” for her volunteer work. {Elle UK / People}
Alexa Chung for Superga, Pt 2: In addition to reprising her role as campaign star, Alexa Chung has also been enlisted as stylist for the new ads. Will you buy? {Telegraph}

Heidi Klum and Seal Aren’t The Kind Who Have Nasty Break-Ups: We’ve watched a lot of nasty celebrity divorces unfold (see: Demi & Ashton), but just a day after confirming his breakup with his supermodel wife, Heidi Klum, Seal is assuring us that his divorce will not be drama-filled (at least not publicly). The singer told Tavis Smiley: “We’re just not those kind of people. What one has to do in this situation is to remain civil, to retain one’s dignity, to be professional, and to understand that we are not the only people on this planet that are going through this.” {ONTD}
