Suzy Menkes Talks Blogger Backlash, the Perils of Fast Fashion, and Getting Flashed by Madonna

Last night, Fern Mallis sat down with Suzy Menkes for the latest installment of her “Fashion Icon” series at 92Y.

The noted fashion critic candidly (and sometimes hilarious) addressed everything from catching an upskirt view of Madonna sans underwear at the Met Gala, why she didn’t like Punk: Chaos to Couture, and why she was surprised by the negative response to her controversial “Circus of Fashion” piece.

Tim Blanks on the Street Style Phenomenon: ‘It Makes Monsters, It Doesn’t Make Gods’

And the fashion circus debate continues.

The Princess and the Peacock: We’re Still Not Over Suzy vs. Susie

“So do you want to talk about this?” asks Leah.

This being Suzy Menkes’ “Circus of Fashion” article from T, which turned into this “Blog is a Dirty Word” manifesto from Leandra Medine, which rolled into this “Sad Clown” response from Susie Lau. (A Times story called “My Look, My Ego, My Brand” snuck in there, as well, as did a piece questioning whether fashion bloggers have gone “too far” on The Daily Beast.)

The Most Influential Personal Style Bloggers Right Now

Some say the age of the personal style blogger is over.

Today, the girl needs more than an outfit, a boyfriend, and a camera. Bloggers need to think about production quality, editorial strategy, and affiliate programs to really gain a foothold on the web. Yet it still comes down that camera. Nine times out of 10, the bloggers who move merchandise, who get people talking, who attract repeat advertisers, love to strike a pose.

So we say the personal style blogger isn’t going anywhere—-in fact, she’s more powerful than ever.

Proof that Street Style Has Lost Its Authenticity

At some point “street style” referred to stylish people wearing their own clothes that they bought and put together in outfits themselves and then just went about their business. Now, there are stylists, PRs, agents, staged shoots, and more factors coming together to take the authenticity out of street style, especially during fashion week.

How soon before they just cut the charade of spontaneity and set up an actual red carpet in front of the tents?
