Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs Are Not a Couple, Thank You Very Much

Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs are the dynamic duo behind the uber successful line Cushnie et Ochs–nominated for the prestigious Swarovski Award at yesterday’s CFDA Awards. Cushnie and Ochs, who are gorgeous to boot, attended the awards with Karlie Kloss, whom they called their “tall statue of a date.”

Over the weekend we bumped into the two at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic and asked them to address the longstanding rumors that the two are actually a couple, among other things. Here’s what they had to say:

Everything You Need to Know About Tonight’s CFDA Awards
A Handy Primer

Everything You Need to Know About Tonight’s CFDA Awards

The 2013 CFDA awards, fashion’s Oscars if you will, will be handed out in mere hours. The industry has been gathering to recognize and honor its leading talents since 1981.

A lot has changed since the early years of the awards. What was once a small intimate industry event is now a widely covered celebrity event. “I think it reflects a broader shift over the last few years where fashion has become more and more popular,” Style.com’s editor in chief Dirk Standen told us. “The internet has had a lot to do with that. It’s entertainment on a par with movies and music.”

So to prep you for tonight’s awards we’ve assembled this handy primer. In it you’ll find the complete list of nominees, our predictions on who will take home the big prizes, and all the celebrity presenters and attendees slated to show up.

Nadja Swarovski on Supporting Young Design Talent and Selecting This Year’s CFDA Award Nominees

Nadja Swarovski on Supporting Young Design Talent and Selecting This Year’s CFDA Award Nominees

Whether you’re going to a movie, the theater, a fashion show, or even Vienna’s Life Ball, chances are Swarovski is there, twinkling on some embellishment on a curtain, a chandelier, a costume, an evening dress, or, in the case of the Life Ball, a very blingy, very large AIDS ribbon. All those little crystals do a lot to support the arts–especially fashion. At Monday’s CFDA Awards, Swarovski sponsors awards for womenswear, menswear, and accessories.

The woman at the helm of all that glittering support is Nadja Swarovski, whose great, great, grandfather, Daniel Swarovski, founded the company and worked with all the major couture houses in Paris at the start of the 19th century. We grabbed a few minutes with the extremely busy Swarovski in advance of Monday’s awards to pick her brain about everything from how Swarovski scouts and supports designers to her background working with famed fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert.

The Blonds on Creating Beyoncé’s Blinged Out Boob Bustier

The Blonds are known for combining couture-level embellishment with Bob Mackie kitsch. The duo’s Swarovski-covered corsets have become signatures for many a pop star (Rihanna, Katy Perry, to name a few).

Designers Phillipe and David Blond’s latest creation was a commission for superstar Beyoncé’s latest world tour, The Mrs. Carter Show, and although the set list provides no new material (sad face), she’s retired her vintage Thierry Mugler for a provocative new number by the pair that’s making news the world over. Yeah, we’re talking about that crazy sparkly boob corset. We chat with the designers about the shocking look, their inspiration behind it, and working for Queen Bey.

Costume Designer Esosa Talks Motown Style

Even if you’re not a musical person, I’d wager to say you’ll like Motown the Musical, which opened on Broadway this week. The show, written by Motown creator Berry Gordy, goes at breakneck speed through five decades of Motown history (including Gordy’s childhood) and through 50 of Motown’s greatest hits. You’re bound to hear one or 20 songs you know by heart, and at the show I attended, singing along was encouraged.

With a score that encompasses hits from The Supremes, The Jackson Five, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Marvin Gaye (the list goes on and on), you’d think it would be hard to focus on much else–the story, the costumes, the set. The New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood justly faults the show for prioritizing the music over storytelling (though when the music is this good, you can see why the producers would want to cram it all in there). But Motown was a style as well as a sound. And the task of creating the costumes for the show, which sparkled extra bright thanks to a sponsorship from Swarovski, fell to Tony Award nominated costume designer–and Project Runway Season 7 runner-up–Esosa.
