Seven Questions for diNeila Designer Neila Granzoti Rudden

Seven Questions for diNeila Designer Neila Granzoti Rudden

As New Yorkers, our access to fabulous beaches is limited and, as a result, so is the number of bikinis in our closets. The lifestyle of the perennially tanned, international beach-goer is one that is entirely foreign to me, but a lucky few were practically born into it. One of those people is swimwear designer Neila Granzoti Rudden, who was born and raised in Sao Paulo, where swimsuits are more or less a uniform.

While it may shock no one that a Brazilian-raised beach bum became a swimwear designer, Neila’s cultural background and experiences are more diverse than that–and that wide range of influences shows in her designs. Her parents are Brazilian and Italian and she’s also lived in London, where she earned a degree in graphic design, and Milan, until she eventually came to New York to launch her collection.

Now, her super-sexy bikinis are all over the latest Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue and she just finished shooting diNeila’s next campaign in St. Bart’s with the line’s newest face–Sports Ilustrated model (and John Legend’s girlfriend) Christine fTeigan.

We recently spoke with Neila to gain a glimpse into her fabulous life.

Commercial Sunscreens Get Bashed By Environmentalists: Check Out Their Green Picks

Sunscreen is a no-brainer in the summertime. Or is it? We’ve talked to dermatologists about sunscreens and how to choose one, but the conversation is decidedly more complex than that.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), a lobbying group and think tank, stays on top of environmental concerns. It’s not a huge fan of sunscreens (though they acknowledge that they’re necessary), and just released its annual sunscreen report. They profiled over 1,700 products and claim that 80% of these aren’t safe.

Tanning Is Super Popular Now: An Analysis of the Reasons Why (Thanks, Pippa Middleton!)

Let’s face it: tan skin hasn’t really gone out of style since the heyday of the ’80s when girls slathered baby oil on themselves and baked in their backyards. There was possibly a brief stint in the ’90s–the heroin chic era–when a golden tan wasn’t quite as desirable, but it’s never really disappeared. Now it’s come roaring back with a vengeance.

From the boom of Brazilian models like Gisele and Alessandra Ambrosio to the caricature of tanning portrayed on Jersey Shore, a glow has never been more desirable. And thanks to a certain very tan British family, the trend is guaranteed to stick around for awhile.

Beach Beauty: How To Protect Your Colored Hair From Sun and Chlorine

Between the news that Kate Middleton and Prince William just jetted off to their honeymoon and the fancy beach party that was Chanel’s cruise collection, you’re probably ready for summer. But if you have colored or highlighted hair, you’ll want to protect your investment while you’re out in the elements.

Chlorine, sun, and salt water can all wreak havoc on a dye job, so we looked for advice from our favorite hair expert, stylist Chris Lospalluto from the Sally Hershberger salon here in NYC.

Nars’ New Bronzing Collection Will Make You Feel Like You’re In French Polynesia

Nars’ new limited edition “Laguna: Portrait of Paradise” collection will make you wish for warm tropical breezes, especially if you’re stuck somewhere grey and rainy–like NYC. The three piece collection takes some Nars classics and tweaks them for summer.

Beach Beauty: The Basics of the Bikini Line (Don’t Try a Brazilian at Home!)

It’s almost beach season, which means if you’ve been neglecting your bikini line all winter it’s time to get that thing in check. Timing is everything when it comes to bikini line maintenance, so we spoke to Cynthia Chua, the owner of Strip Ministry of Waxing, to get some guidance about when, where, and how to keep things nice and tidy.

How soon before hitting the beach or pool do you recommend waxing and why?
Do wax two to three days in advance, especially if you are new to waxing, as people with very sensitive skin might incur slight redness or blotchiness. It will calm down in a day or so. Waxing removes hair from the root, which keeps your skin hair-free for around 2-3 weeks.

How should you take care of the area after you get a wax?

Check Out MAC’s New Surf-Inspired Summer Collection

It’s been quite an exciting week in the world of beauty: first a slew of new OPI nail colors, then news that LC has her own beauty site, and now MAC’s exuberant summer color collection. (OK, so pretty, colorful things excite me.)

MAC’s Surf, Baby! collection is an unabashed ode to sand and surf. You’ll find four new lipstick and Lipglass shades, and two new crushed metallic pigment sets–one in blue/aqua and one in pinky purple. Eyeliner pencils are teal and frosty yellow-white, and this theme continues into the shadows, too.
