Imitation Resort 2012: In the Style of Tara Subkoff

For Resort 2012, Imitation designer Tara Subkoff went back to her cinematic roots, directing a short silent film starring a glittering bevy of it-girls, from Becka Diamond to Nicole Trunfio, Lissy Trullie, Karima Adebibe, and Cecile Winckler.

Many of these same ladies–as well as requisite sexy actors Marc Ruffalo and Liev Schrieber–mixed and mingled at the Jane Hotel’s bar last night, where Subkoff showed the short in a continual loop. (Charlotte Ronson, Chrissie Miller, Shanea Grimes, Sky Ferreira, Karen Elson, and Jen Brill were there, too.)

Several were wearing the Imitation resort/holiday line, a collection of flouncy dresses and high-waisted trousers, all with a vintage feel.

Our 20 Favorite Images from the Self Service Online Archives
Fashion Is Fun

Our 20 Favorite Images from the Self Service Online Archives

Yesterday, Self Service, the hit French fashion magazine with an insider tilt, relaunched its website with full archives. The goal was to create a database of everyone that’s ever been in Self Service. It’s like an online encyclopedia filled with people who are really, really important in the fashion industry. (Seriously, there’s an index.)

Now you know I love a good online archive, so I spent yesterday afternoon scouring Self Service‘s to bring you the most iconic, weirdest, and captivating photos from the book’s 16 year history. While my computer’s hard drive is now 25% covered in images of Hannelore Knuts, I’ve managed to pull out 20 photos that are particularly noteworthy.

But don’t rely on me entirely. After checking out my edit, go to Self Service’s new site and find out for yourself.

Chloë Sevigny for Opening Ceremony Resort 2012: High School High

The first thing you noticed was the set–a steaming hot high school gym in NoLita, and a stage filled with reaper-like mannequins dressed head-to-toe in safety orange–almost a life size diorama. “I wanted to do something site specific so that when you went in you were kind of transported to when you were younger,” Chloë Sevigny told us after the lights went down at her first-ever runway show for the collection she designs with Opening Ceremony. “There was an empty stage and I said, ‘We have to do some sort of tableau.’ My friend Charlie Wing is an artist who hasn’t showed yet in New York, and I’m so inspired by him. He loved the gator print. I just wanted something for people to look at.”

But besides the backdrop, there were clothes to see, and they were very cute.

Diane von Furstenberg Helped Out With Costumes on Her Daughter’s Movie

Diane von Furstenberg‘s daughter Tatiana is a writer/director in Hollywood. You’ve probably heard more about von Furstenberg’s other child, Alex, who gained Page Six-style notoriety when he flew a plane with a banner that said “Reggie Miller Stop Pursuing Married Women” over the coast of Southern California a few years ago after his fiance was caught in a sexting scandal with Reggie Miller. But I digress. Tatiana von Furstenberg wrote and directed this movie called Tanner Hall starring Rooney Mara before she was cast in Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

According to “Rambling Reporter” Merle Ginsberg at the The Hollywood Reporter (subscription required), mama von Fusternberg helped out with the costumes for the film, which is described by IMDB as “a vivid peek into the private world of an all-girls boarding school.” Which sounds kind of awesome. von Furstenberg recently launched a home decor line, just handed out some awards for her second annual DVF Awards to honor female humanitarians, heads up the CFDA and, you know, designs some clothes. And now movie costumes? We’re tired thinking about all of it.

Imitation Fall 2011: Tara Subkoff’s Imitation is the Real Deal

Full disclosure: we didn’t quite make it into Imitation’s show yesterday at MAC & Milk, due, once again, to the venue’s crushing methods of crowd control. After ten minutes’ worth of polite begging and pleading with the staff, who assured us that the studio’s penthouse couldn’t fit even one more person without becoming a fire hazard, we gave up hope and chose to wait for photos to pop up online.

It looks as though designer Tara Subkoff, who launched Imitation a decade ago as a concept line crafted from vintage and secondhand finds, was in a minimalist mood this season.

Last Night’s Parties: V, Grazia, and 10 Took Us Dancing

PARIS–Look at the cult around Vogue or Purple: Magazines today are institutions, with their own admirers and followers. No wonder they’re also becoming the life and soul of Parisian nightlife. Increasingly, brands are pairing up with hip publications to ensure a successful event.

One day before the end of Paris Fashion Week, we put on our blue suede shoes and went out, wined and dined by various magazines.

Sobering Thoughts

Sometimes it takes a little dose of reality to make us appreciate what we’ve got and how lucky we are and boy did we just get some. We just read very sad news over on The Cut that Imitation of Christ designer Tara Subkoff has been diagnosed with a benign brain tumor. She’s only 36 Read more →

Who’s the Boss Now?

Here’s an interesting fashion week tidbit – if you can handle any more -Tara Subkoff is playing artistic director for FORM’s Spring 09 show. The actress/designer/party girl is in charge of the “feel, quality and experience” of the runway – so unless she’s picking the music and doing the lighting, we’re pretty sure artistic director Read more →
