Tavi Gevinson and Iris Apfel Are Having a Conversation at the Met About ‘Good Taste/Bad Taste’

Each year the Metropolitan Museum of Art hosts sit-down conversations with the fashion elite in celebration of the Costume Institute’s exhibit. Previous line-ups have drawn large crowds, and we’re expecting the same from this year’s presentation, which features a pretty unique combination of personalities (and accessories).

On Sunday June 17, New Yorker writer Judith Thurman–who wrote an incredible article about “Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations” and who also wrote the introduction to the book which accompanies the exhibit–will moderate a discussion between Iris Apfel and Tavi Gevinson. Called “Good Taste/Bad Taste: The Evolution of Contemporary Chic,” the museum couldn’t have picked two more appropriate ladies to hash out that topic. While both participants are well known for their fondness for layering, their seventy-four year age gap is sure to account for more than a few differences in opinion (or maybe not, since Tavi is such an old soul).

Week In Review

Fashionista Week in Review: Karl Lagerfeld in a Mankini, P’Trique Spills Charlotte Free’s Maybelline ‘Chicret,’ and Victoria Beckham Is Secretly Hilarious

Antonio Lopez Gets a New Biography + The Best Karl Lagerfeld Photo Ever: Renowned fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez was once close with Karl Lagerfeld, so naturally the new biography about Lopez includes pictures of a younger, buffer Lagerfeld.

Hashtag “Chicret”: We love P’Trique, but we love pink-tressed model Charlotte Free even more, which is why we were so excited to watch this hilarious video with P’Trique announcing Charlotte’s new gig with Maybelline.

Hell Hath No Fury Like A Model Scorned: Or in this case, a supermodel ignored. Find out why Coco Rocha is so pissed at Elle Brasil.

Kimye Debut as Couple at Chanel Dinner: In the surest sign so far that the world will end in 2012, Kim K and Kanye West stepped out together publicly for the first time at a Chanel dinner. Has anyone been keeping a timer here? Surely it’s been about 15 minutes….

What Really Happened With That U.O. Star of David Shirt: The internet worked itself up into a tizzy over an Urban Outfitters shirt, but here’s why we aren’t buying (this time).

How Tavi Gevinson Makes Money

At this point, we know a fair amount about Tavi Gevinson and her evolution from a 13-year-old blogging about her fashion obsession to a 16-year-old (as of Saturday, according to her Wikipedia. Also, what? All this happened in less than three years?) running a successful and awesome editorial site for teens, doing public speaking engagements, singing and starring in films and ad campaigns.

What she hasn’t spoken much about is how she monetizes it all or how much help she gets from, you know, adults.

Tavi Gevinson On Singing, Acting, ‘Toning Down the Kook’ and College

Tavi Gevinson recently starred in Wren’s fall 2012 short film, “Beware of Young Girls.” In it, she displayed several of her many talents, including singing, and inspired her directors (and I) to gush about about how great and smart and inspiring she and her website, Rookie, are. Indeed, Gevinson is someone to “beware of” in the sense that she’s got a bright future ahead of her. So, when Wren offered us the chance to shoot her a few questions, we asked her about just that. Click through for Tavi’s thoughts on shooting the Wren film, her toned down personal style, pursuing singing/modeling/acting and college, which she does plan to attend.

Watch Tavi Gevinson Perform Neil Young’s ‘Heart of Gold’
Fashion Is Fun

Watch Tavi Gevinson Perform Neil Young’s ‘Heart of Gold’

Tavi Gevinson is accomplishing more at age 15 than most women twice her age. Not only is she widely admired in the fashion industry for her blog Style Rookie and her online magazine Rookie (that she founded and edits, natch), she’s whip-smart and BFFs with some of fashion’s youngest darlings. Now she can add songstress to her resume. As we reported she would, Tavi covered “Heart of Gold” after a midnight screening of her new short film, one of the few people Neil Young has allowed to do so. The song is also featured in the short film, Cadaver, which The Cut is reporting to be in talks for a feature length film.

Tavi to Perform Neil Young Cover Live During Fashion Week

Is Tavi about to embark on a singing career?

As you may have heard, multi-talented teen Tavi Gevinson lent her vocals to an animated short film film called Cadaver, which co-stars Christopher Lloyd and Kathy Bates. As you can hear in the trailer, the blogger-turned-editor-turned-singer/actress(?) can do more than sing Taylor Swift and Joni Mitchell covers in her bedroom.

She can sing Neil Young covers in a movie with Neil Young’s approval even (Tavi is one of the few people Young has allowed to cover the song “Heart of Gold”). Jonah D. Ansell, the film’s director, said in a release, “As Tavi personally and professionally evolves beyond the fashion vertical from which she was first publicly revered, and continues to discover and embrace her voice as a fierce and fearless young woman, her rendition of Heart of Gold will inspire a new generation to never relent in the pursuit of what you love.” A lot of responsibility for the 15-year-old, who calls the film “gamechanging,” but she can probably handle it. Of course, that’s not all.
