How I'm Making It

Zana Bayne’s Path from High School Fashion Blogger to Celeb-Approved Harness Designer

With her piercing blue eyes and voluminous raven hair, Zana Bayne is striking, even before you factor in the fact that she is usually wearing a harness. The self-taught leatherworker has made quite a name for herself since launching her namesake label in 2010, dressing celebs like Madonna, Lady Gaga and Chloe Sevigny as well as fashion insiders like Taylor Tomasi-Hill and Sally Singer.

We caught up with Bayne to talk about how she went from high school fashion blogger to in-demand accessories designer with clients like Prabal Gurung and Lady Gaga.

Why Some Street Style Superstars Are Shying Away from the Spotlight

If you feel like you didn’t see much of street style starlet Taylor Tomasi Hill this past fashion month, that’s because you didn’t.

Tomasi Hill is deliberately avoiding photographers, repeating outfits and slipping in and out of shows ala Anna Wintour, according to our sources. The reason? She reportedly wants her position as Moda Operandi’s artistic director to be taken more seriously.

To be fair, this doesn’t mean she’s gone altogether. Tomasi Hill did a photo diary for Harperbazaar.com over fashion week, and was featured on Style.com.

But her dialed-back presence should not go unnoticed, as she’s not the only one in that first crop of street style stars to selectively avoid the spotlight.

Why Are So Many Editors Leaving Magazines for Retail Brands?

Why Are So Many Editors Leaving Magazines for Retail Brands?

Yesterday, WWD reported that Anamaria Wilson, the fashion features director at Harper’s Bazaar, would be leaving her post at the magazine to join Michael Kors as senior vice president of global corporate communications.

Wilson is something of a veteran in the publishing industry, building her career over the past twenty years at such prestigious titles as WWD, W Magazine and, of course, Harper’s Bazaar, so her recent move to Kors is somewhat unexpected–and it’s definitely a change of pace. But Wilson isn’t alone: Several big-name editors have recently made the jump from editorial to brands. NYLON‘s Faran Krentcil is now at Clarins and Shopbop; New York Mag’s Jenny Kang is now at J. Crew; GQ‘s Sean Hotchkiss is also now at J.Crew; Glamour‘s Jenny Feldman is now at Amazon; Lucky‘s Jen Ford is now at Kate Spade; Marie Claire‘s Taylor Tomasi Hill is now at Moda Operandi; and the list goes on.

So what’s going on? Why are all these editorial-minded individuals leaving publishing to work for retail brands?

The Clothes: Sporty futuristic. Kao re-imagined her signature mini-prints and geometric cuts in origami inspired pieces that were less body con than usual, which was a lovely change. What We Saw at NYFW, Day 2

What We Saw at NYFW, Day 2

Sometimes the best things we see during fashion week happen far away from the runway.

Today we took in Day 2 of NYFW and snapped street style stars Taylor Tomasi Hill, Miroslava Duma, and Elena Perminova doing their thing–we even shot Bill Cunningham. We gawked at iconic models Iman and Carolyn Murphy, and swooned over the best beauty looks at Jason Wu, SUNO, and Rebecca Minkoff. Cuties Anna-Sophia Robb and Lauren Conrad popped up, too.

Taylor Tomasi Hill Takes Sao Paulo: Moda Operandi’s Artistic Director Talks Fashion Week, Designers to Watch and More

For the third season in a row, Fashionista has covered Sao Paulo Fashion Week. Outside of the four main fashion weeks, Sao Paulo is proving to be an important one to follow–in our opinion. Moda Operandi Gets a Whopping $36 Million in Funding from LVMH and IMG, Plans to Launch Traditional E-Commerce

Moda Operandi, the site that brought us the online trunk show–allowing shoppers to buy looks hot off the runway–has had stratospheric success since it launched back in February 2011 with its unique sales model. And it’s about to get bigger and even more innovative.

Moda Operandi just announced that it received a round of funding to the tune of $36 million. Condé Nast, a previous investor, threw some money at the company again, as did LVMH and IMG for the first time. Think about the possibilities: Helmed by co-founders Aslaug Magnusdottir (formerly of Gilt Groupe) and Lauren Santo Domingo (formerly of Vogue) and armed with investments from some fashion business heavy-hitters, the online retailer is perfectly positioned to change the way people shop for fashion.

So what exactly is the company going to do with this round of financing?

The Fashion Pack (Hamish Bowles, Karlie Kloss, Giovanna Battaglia and More) Descends On St. Louis for a Hoedown to Celebrate Derek Blasberg’s Birthday

St. Louis, Missouri is known for a few things: that big arch, delicious barbecue, Nelly, and hosting the evil St.Louis Cardinals [Ed.Note: Go Cubs!] What it is not known for is international fashion editors, models and socialites prancing around in Prada. Yet St. Louis encountered all those things this past weekend, thanks to Lou native Derek Blasberg, who convinced his fashionable friends including Giovanna Battaglia, Elizabeth von Thurns und Taxis, Hamish Bowles, the Brant brothers, fellow Missourian Karlie Kloss, and Taylor Tomasi Hill to fête his birthday at the Blasberg Family Farm in Hillsboro, Missouri. We bet the Midwest is still reeling.
