Girls Demonstrate Outside Teen Vogue, Demand That Mags ‘Don’t Compromise Their Self Esteem’ By Featuring Retouched Models

It’s hard to believe that a 14-year-old could actually inspire change in the fashion industry, but that’s just what teenager Julia Bluhm did when she teamed up with girl-activist group SPARK Movement last April, petitioning Seventeen magazine to feature unaltered, un-retouched real girls. Seventeen EIC Anne Shoket finally responded earlier this month with a “Body Peace Treaty“–pledging to be more transparent about their photography practices and to “always feature real girls and models who are healthy” and “never change girls’ body or face shapes.”

Now, a ripple effect is underway. Today other members of the SPARK Movement demonstrated outside of Conde Nast to petition Teen Vogue to make similar changes.

Who’s Covering What: All the September Issue Cover Stars Revealed

It’s that time of year again. Nope, we don’t mean Comic Con–we’re talking about September glossy cover reveals. September issues are traditionally the cash cows for any fashion mag, and whoever graces the cover can make or break that month’s sales. Today WWD revealed a slew of covers–and we’ve added some reveals of our own.

Overall it’s not a very surprising list.

Teens To Demonstrate Outside Teen Vogue Offices Tomorrow To Demand ‘Real Images of Real Girls’

Back in April, 14-year old Julia Bluhm petitioned Seventeen to stop digitally altering models’ faces and bodies. She got 85,000 signatures, staged a demonstration outside Seventeen‘s offices and met with Seventeen EIC Anne Shoket, who, in response, published a new “Body Peace Treaty” in the teen glossy’s latest issue promising to “Never change girls’ body or face shapes (Never have, never will).”

While Shoket doesn’t actually state that the magazine will stop using Photoshop, and in fact just vows to continue current practices and be more up front about what goes into photo shoots, Bluhm was happy with the results.

Now, Carina Cruz and Emma Stydahar, 16 and 17-year-old members of advocacy group SPARK, of which Bluhm is also a member, have launched a similar petition on Change.org asking Teen Vogue to “Follow Seventeen’s example and pledge not to alter any model’s body or face and to celebrate beauty in all its forms,” which so far has over 26,000 signatures.

Yesterday, Teen Vogue‘s PR director Erin Kaplan (remember her?) released the following statement in response:

Seventeen Announces New ‘Body Peace Treaty’ In Response to Petition Lead by 14-Year-Old

Back in April, we told you about 14-year-old Julia Bluhm, who started a petition on Change.org urging teen glossy Seventeen to post one unaltered “real” photo spread per month, with the hopes it would help girls feel better about their bodies. At the time, the petition had collected a respectable 7,000 signatures; now it’s close to 85,000 and Bluhm, along with an organization called SPARK, staged a demonstration outside Seventeen‘s New York offices, launched a Twitter campaign, and met with Seventeen EIC Anne Shoket, who, as we’ve learned from Ad Week, has finally responded to Bluhm’s request.

The August issue of Seventeen features a page dedicated to the new “Body Peace Treaty.” Here are the most relevant “vows:”

The Evolution of the Fashion Editor: Industry Insiders Weigh in On How the Job Has Changed for Better or for Worse

The Evolution of the Fashion Editor: Industry Insiders Weigh in On How the Job Has Changed for Better or for Worse

There’s no question that, over the past ten years, fashion media (and all media for that matter) has changed dramatically–a fact that was underscored last week when bloggers Scott Schuman and Garance Dore took home the CFDA Media Award, something that would have previously been unthinkable.

“10 years ago, [Scott and Garance] wouldn’t have gotten this award,” Pharrel said during the ceremony. “That’s what’s so exciting about tonight.”

Garance reiterated that fact, saying, “Six years ago I opened my blog [and] it wasn’t taken very seriously.” Fast forward to 2012, and she’s accepting the highest honor from her peers. Clearly, the landscape has changed drastically.

“It is just a different world and different time that we live in,” CFDA president Steven Kolb said, of the pair’s win.

“The reason why Scott and Garance won the Media Award and who they are and what they do, is no different than those who have won before,” he added. “Fashion and media are changing every second because of technology.”

Truer words could not have been spoken. Gone are the days when print publications alone ruled the industry–now news is broken on Twitter, and blogs and websites have become legitimate (and necessary) sources of original reporting. While these changes are generally improvements–particularly for the way we consume media–they also have huge implications for the jobs of those who work in the industry, and not all of them are positive. Now, an editor is not just an editor: She or he must also be a blogger, a Tweeter, an Instagrammer, a street style star and in many cases, a “personality.” And that’s not even mentioning all the DJ gigs, TV appearances and special projects that editors today are racking up.

So, what exactly does it mean to be an editor, in today’s ever-changing, digital climate?
