Terry Richardson

While her debut LP Born to Die has been pretty much universally panned by critics, Lana Del Rey‘s fifteen minutes are ticking away mighty slowly – considering all of recently acquired (and fast-growing) cover girl credentials. In the past few months, the ‘gangsta Nancy Sinatra’ who seemed to appear out of nowhere with the summer success of her ultra-depressing, Youtube-driven single “Video Games” has gotten extra pouty on the covers of Vogue UK, Interview Russia, Q, and Billboard. And now she can add two more major mags to that growing list, having nabbed the latest covers of bothT: The New York Times Style Magazine and the music issue of Lovecat, shot by Terry Richardson and Ellen Von Unwerth, respectively. Yesterday shots of Gwyneth Paltrow’s cover for the newly designed Harper’s Bazaar leaked, and today the full spread is available, complete with a meaty interview. Terry Richardson lensed the whole editorial, which features Paltrow wearing revealing black dresses against Richardson’s signature stark white background. In addition to the racy Anthony Vaccarello she dons on the subscriber cover, she wears Lanvin, Givenchy, Versace, Alexander McQueen, and Blumarine.

People seem to either love or hate Gwyneth Paltrow–the accompanying interview is a good illustration of why. Paltrow is pretty unfiltered. Read the highlights here and make your own assessment. It starts with writer Justine Picardie noting that Paltrow would “fall naturally into yoga stretches during the course of the conversation.” We also learn that Goop is being relaunched and expanded, and that she’s working on a second cookbook, which will feature “really delicious health food.” Click through for highlights and head over to Harper’s Bazaar for the full story: Read more »

Kate Moss is the New Face of Mango

Tuesday, Jan 24, 2012 / 9:54 AM

Another season, another Kate Moss-fronted ad campaign.

In her first major campaign post-nuptials, Kate Moss has been announced as the new face of Barcelona-based retailer Mango. It’s not her first time working with the brand–she starred in a wacky video for them last year with her friend Terry Richardson, which Richardson directed for their fall 2011 runway show.

For spring 2012, Mango has signed both Moss and Richardson again for the print campaign. So, why Moss? Mango’s rationale for hiring Moss is probably similar to that of the many brands who have done the same. Read more »

Terry Richardson for Equinox Backlash: Another Terry Richardson scandal? No way. This week, Uncle Terry’s new campaign for Equinox proved to be too controversial for some of the gym’s members – but not in the way you might expect.

David Beckham Strips Down for H&M: This week gave us our first glimpse of Becks in his own name brand truly tighty-whiteys, looking absolutely drool worthy–if a tad bit stern.

Kardashian Sisters to be Barbie-fied: The Kardashian family’s way of combating the bad publicity following the end of Kim’s 72-day marriage is to continue their overexposure, as if the public isn’t already sick of them. The Kardashians struck up a deal with Mattel to create Barbie dolls which will not only look like them, but, as a source tells Us Weekly “reflect their measurements.” Barbie with a booty? We’ll have to see it to believe it! {UsMagazine}

The Duchess of Cambridge Chooses Her Charities: As part of her royal duties, Duchess KMidd has finally chosen the four charities she will patronize: the National Portrait Gallery (so they’ll be sure to paint her looking extra fierce), Action on Addiction, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, and The Art Room, which provides art classes for at risk teens. All noble causes! {WWD (Subscription required)}

Apparently, People Are Buying Paris Hilton’s Fragrances: The socialite told FHM she’s made 1.3 billion in revenue off her fragrances since 2005. Yeah, we’re just as confused as you are. {JustJared}

Equinox, an upscale health club chain with outposts in New York, Dallas, Chicago, California and the East Coast, is making waves with its members after unveiling some new campaign images. The chain has a history of shooting “fashion-y” ads: Past photogs include Gilles Bensimon, Ellen von Unwerth, and Steven Klein. Terry Richardson shot the gym’s last two campaigns, and his most recent one is stirring up some ire from gym members.

The shots are done in typical Terry style–one is supposed to look like a “post-coital” couple. You get the idea. However, it wasn’t the sexy thing that annoyed Equinox’s members–it was the models. They took to Equinox’s Facebook page to complain: Read more »

Dont judge a book by its cover… Unless it’s a magazine, in which case, sometimes the cover is the deciding factor of whether or not to buy the mag altogether.

The best covers of 2011 returned to a new naturalism and a fun aesthetic, like the Lara Stone T cover we’re still drooling over, pictured at left. Sure, there’s still room for artifice in fashion (see: Stella Tennant on Vogue Italia), but 2011 was a year for reflecting on natural beauties, incredible models, and stellar photography.

After toiling over hundred of covers, we’re bringing you “The Best” according to us. Did we forget your favorite? Let us know in the comments.

“Once I got there, there was no point in being afraid,” said Daisy Lowe about her Oyster cover shoot in which she had to mingle with live snakes.

Photographed by Will Davidson with creative direction by Stevie Dance, this editorial isn’t messing around. Lowe channels bad girl Sixties brides (you know, the kind to wed without pants) and proves that she might just be the sexiest Brit-girl around. (Sorry, Pippa.)

We got a preview of her interview with Zac Bayly in Oyster where she talks about the term “It-Girl” (she hates it), her 2010 Pirelli shoot with Terry Richardson (she loved it), and prancing around in her underwear. (You guess.)

andrej

Pretty boy (maybe the prettiest boy?) Andrej Pejic is undoubtedly one of the top models of 2011. He’s worked for some of the best names in the biz but he’s not resting on his laurels. He sat down with Vogue UK to talk inspiration, the inevitable comparisons to transgender model Lea T, and which photographers he’d love to work with next.

Here’s a photo from Diesel Mexico’s Twitter, posted last night, showing photographer Terry Richardson and a bunch of male models grabbing their junk. “Terry Richardson ( @Terry_World ) and his models wearing Diesel Underwear obviously!!!!!” the Tweet reads. Only the models are actually wearing underwear while Terry, whom we assume was there to shoot a campaign for Diesel underwear (he’s shot for Diesel before), dropped his drawers, too, offering up a lovely view of his pubes. (Morning!) One of the models is holding up an iPhone that says “I ‘heart’ porn.’ Nice touch, no?

Provocative, sexually charged photos are Richardson’s M.O. That he got naked during a shoot is also nothing new. In March of 2010 models Rie Rasmussen and Jamie Peck accused him of sexual harassment, of being a “creep” and manipulating models into taking their clothes off. Peck described her account in The Gloss, writing that during her shoot with Richardson he got naked: “Before I could say ‘whoa, whoa, whoa!’ dude was wearing only his tattoos and waggling the biggest dick I’d ever seen dangerously close to my unclothed person (granted, I hadn’t seen very many yet).” Even though other models and industry players came forward with stories about Richardson’s inappropriate behavior (their accounts were published in Jezebel) no suits were filed. Richardson responded to the allegations on his blog, saying “I just want to take a moment to say I’m really hurt by the recent and false allegations of insensitivity and misconduct. I feel fortunate to work with so many extraordinary people each and every day. I’ve always been considerate and respectful of the people I photograph and I view what I do as a real collaboration between myself and the people in front of the camera.”

The controversy around Richardson has since subsided and he’s getting more work than ever. You think this will stir things up again? Read more »

Image of the Day: Franca Sozzani Covers Industrie

Monday, Nov 28, 2011 / 5:06 PM

The outspoken and sassy Italian Vogue editor-in-chief is looking rather mysterious on the cover of the latest issue of Industrie. Sozzani follows in the footsteps of Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott and, before that, Marc Jacobs in drag for Issue 4 of the glossy, which is published twice yearly. Read more »

In the world of fashion there is a small yet consistent collection of photographers who get the majority of work for major publications and brands. In fact, many of them seem to have quite the monopoly on the fashion world. Legends like Richard Avedon and Irving Penn continued to work prolifically up until the time they passed away, and that seems to be what is so great about being behind the camera instead of in front of it. Top photographers are given the chance to work for years in an industry where most figures are in one day and out the next.

But how do we differentiate one top photographer from another? We’ll show you what to look for from visual style, what publications they regularly appear in, as well as recent ongoing collaborations with brands and models of some of the top working fashion photographers of today.
