Kristen Stewart said something nice! About fashion! We wish she would stop wearing sneaks on the red carpet, but we’ll take what we can get. {HuffPo}
Hilary Duff is really benefiting from those prenatal vitamins, as she was able to give up something beloved by all Hollywood starlets: Her hair extensions. {US Weekly}
Scott Schuman, the man behind the Sartoralist, sounds like he might possibly be the hardest person ever to shop for. {Refinery29}
As a follow up to last year’s fashion book gift guide, we rounded up the best fashion books from 2012, jotted down a little description and pointed you in the right direction of where to buy.
Street style’s a hot topic lately. So we thought after that Times profile blowing the lid off the subject and revealing how contrived and and monetizing the whole medium has become, we’d chat with pioneering street style photographer Scott Schuman (again) and get his perspective on something that he, in a way, helped create.
There’s no doubt that The Sartorialist’s Scott Schuman–largely (and rightfully) credited as one of the first street style sites–has reached a level of success that most bloggers and street style photogs could only dream of. In fact he’s so successful that he’s helped inspire a whole new generation of aspiring street style snappers. The only Read more →
Scott Schuman, the man behind “The Sartorialist” who arguably helped street style photography become the all-pervasive phenomenon it is today, will be receiving the CFDA Media Award for journalism on June 4 along with girlfriend and fellow style blogger, Garance Doré.
In the past Schuman has been pretty outspoken about his success and his general disgust for mainstream fashion media. He continues the dialogue (rant?) in the latest issue of GQ, which hits newsstands May 22. Schuman spouts off to Alex Pappademas about everything from why blogs are better than magazines (historically one of his favorite topics) to his complicated relationship with Dolce & Gabbana. Even Kanye West pops up in the story to offer some worshipful quotes about Schuman. Click through for the highlights of the very entertaining story, which you can read in full here.
Kate Moss’s Arm is Paralyzed: Don’t freak out! It’s only temporary. Lady Kate woke up in the Ritz Paris this past weekend to find herself unable to move her right arm and hand. Apparently the condition is caused by ulnar nerve entrapment, which, while nowhere near permanent, can take several months to totally disappear. Which means it might be a while till KM can work again– though, with all the photoshopping that goes on, it probably wouldn’t be much of a problem to edit Kate’s limp limb. {Daily Mail}
Jude Law’s Daughter’s Conversation-Starting Dress: 12-year-old Iris Law attended Vivienne Westwood’s show, with mum Sadie Frost, wearing a little babydoll Peter Pan-collared dress covered in a conversation hearts print. Sounds adorable, right? Except that, upon closer inspection, the sugary hearts read some not-so-sweet phrases like ‘Blow Me,’ ‘Please Drown,’ and our favorite, ‘Eat Shit.’ Sadie later apologized to the disapproving public via Twitter, claiming the oversight was a #genuinemistake. {Styleite}
High-End Retailers Are Doing Better Than Wal-Mart: For the ninth straight quarter, budget retail giant Wal-Mart is reporting major profit losses. But higher-end stores like Saks and Blommingdale’s have reported increasing profits, with customers spending more on such luxury goods as high-priced jewelry. It seems that Wal-Mart reduced its prices so sharply over the holidays, it actually lost profit. Would raising its prices and quality of goods (with Macy’s and Target-like collaborations, for example) help or hurt Wal-Mart? {New York Times}
What could say “I love you” better than a fat, blingin’ rock from Tiffany & Co.? The famous jeweler seems to think you can. For years, couples have looked to Tiffany’s to provide them with tangible symbols of their love, and now, just in time for Valentine’s Day, the retailer wants its customers to help them define the emotion.
Yesterday, Tiffany & Co’s whatmakestruelove.com, a “unique guide to matters of the heart,” launched an interactive photo blog, “True Love in Pictures.” The retailer tapped the talents of street style photographer Scott Schuman (of Sartorialist fame) and his girlfriend Garance Doré to curate a collection of images that will serve as a source of inspiration for future users. The blog features snapshots of canoodling couples (not them sadly), his and her housewares (like “S” and “G” mugs ahem), and handwritten love notes. Aw.
A tipster noticed this photograph of an incredibly stylish young girl had been posted on The Sartorialist this past Saturday, but that it’s since been deleted. She writes, This gem showed up in my Google Reader from over the weekend, he has obviously since deleted because of the neg comments, but what a creeper. You Read more →
According to this Mediabistro job posting, Scott Schuman of The Satorialist and Garance Dore are looking to expand. And fast. The duo is shopping around for a Digital Ad Sales Director and Trafficker to start immediately.
The new employee will be expected to “oversee the digital ad strategy of the two properties…manage current accounts, generate new business, work to develop new ad solutions, and also be capable of handling the trafficking/tech side.” The individual must have “3+ years of digital sales experience” and be “outgoing and self motivated, with a positive attitude.” (Though we’d like to add a that a potential candidate better have a sense of “integrity” to the list as well.)
The salary is “competitive,” and considering that Schuman said he made between a quarter and half a million dollars off of just two ad accounts alone, we’re guessing (hoping?) the new person will be compensated more than fairly.
Last week, The Talks shed a new light on The Sartorialist’s Scott Schuman with a candid interview in which Schuman called Tavi’s success a conspiracy, said no one believes in magazines and made several comments that suggested that he and Garance are basically the only bloggers doing it right. In an interview published today with Business of Fashion‘s Imran Amed, Schuman says the aforementioned interview is “over 18 months old” and he’s since changed his mind about Tavi and other bloggers. Opening the door to his business practices even further, Schuman also gave new details on advertising, how much money he makes and his next book. Here are the best bits:
Online interview magazine The Talks just published a candid conversation with The Sartorialist‘s Scott Schuman. In it, the original street style blogger (well, almost–everyone copied Bill Cunningham) gives his two cents on Tavi, bloggers in general, how much money he makes, his girlfriend Garance Doré, and advertisers and magazines, which he says are “driven by fear.” He comes across as very…we’ll say ‘confident.’ Also, he uses the word integrity a LOT. Here are the best bits:
The Talks starts out asking Scott about teen bloggers like Tavi Gevinson, the 15-year old with a hugely popular blog and online magazine. Scott says he doesn’t think her audience is that big and calls her success “a little bit of a conspiracy by established print media that wanted to show that this blog thing is not that important, that it’s done by a bunch of twelve year olds.” A little extreme, no? He continues, “But a lot of us are serious grown-ups.”
Then, he says the problem with Tavi and blogs like hers is that they steal pictures from other people, arguing that “for blogs to take the next step, they have to have people like me who are in charge of all the elements – the writing, the visual, everything. Those are the ones companies can buy into.”
