Report From the WWD Beauty Biz Awards: Changes to WWD And The Winners Revealed

This morning, at the ungodly hour of 7:30, the 8th Annual “WWD Beauty Biz Awards” took place at the Four Seasons Restaurant in NYC. Being consummate beauty professionals, everyone in attendance looked refreshed and chic, with lots of Chanel bags and perfectly applied lipstick.

Gina Sanders, the president and CEO of Fairchild Fashion Group, started off the presentation by dishing about changes coming to WWD and Style.com (now owned by Fairchild, of course).

WWD is getting an overall architecture redesign in 2011, and an eight page section called “WWD Style” will be introduced; it will provide deeper “business insight, analysis, and fun.” The men’s coverage will be increased, with new beefier quarterly sections and more weekly coverage. The Beauty Biz insert will also be overhauled. And finally, an iPad application is coming.

Gina was more vague about Style.com– “Like ladies having work done, we don’t want to reveal too much,” she said–but big changes are clearly afoot. She mentioned the potential to reach millions of fanatic fashion and beauty consumers through the site. We will be watching closely.

Now onto the awards.

Thierry Mugler’s New Fragrance Smells Like Figs and Caviar, Can be Refilled

Thierry Mugler’s New Fragrance Smells Like Figs and Caviar, Can be Refilled

Yesterday afternoon we headed over to Clarins’ offices for a preview of Thierry Mugler‘s new fragrance. What we got was an incredibly in-depth and surprisingly interesting tutorial on all that went into the fragrance, which was apparently a lot of time, money and planning. The execution of the preview itself blew us away. Everything in the room, from the lighting to the cocktails to the liquid inside the perfume bottles, was pink. The hors d’œuvres included caviar and figs, which we would later come to find out out are two of the scent’s main ingredients.

The name of the fragrance is, um, Womanity. There was a whole lot of waxing philosophical on the inspiration behind this name, which we will spare you. However, we did find it pretty hilarious that Donna Summers, unaware of Mugler’s fragrance, is apparently coming out with a song called “Womanity,” and the people at at Clarins/Thierry Mugler are desperately trying to work out some kind of collaboration.

The Thierry Mugler Conundrum: Who Will Be Creative Director?

The Thierry Mugler Conundrum: Who Will Be Creative Director?

The Tierry Mugler label, revived in 2008, is rumored to be shopping for a new creative director. The status of current artistic director Rosemary Rodriguez is unknown.

WWD reports that Gareth Pugh is the front-runner for the position, which is understandable and probably true. Pugh’s dramatic silhouettes and unconventional designs reject the traditional conception of ready-to-wear and flirt with the idea of fashion as art, much like Mugler did in the late ’70s and ’80s. Pugh is also a responsible choice since he is only 29 years old, the perfect age for a position that Mugler’s owners will expect him to fill for at least ten to fifteen years.

Along with our desire for Simon Doonan to pretty please start Tweeting, I would also like to add having a drink and a chat with photographer Roxanne Lowit to my list for Santa. I’ve long been a fan of her celebrity portraits, her editorials and especially her nightlife shots. She’s also been shooting backstage at Read more →

Is the New New: Hips & Shoulders

After seeing the Richard Avedon fashion photography exhibit at the International Center for Photography, our love of fifties glamour is revived. We especially love the circle skirts that give volume to the models’ slim frames. The fifties have certainly never disappeared from the fashion spotlight but what’s being accentuated of late, however, is the hips Read more →

Another point for Style.com: The day before Thanksgiving, they predicted that Beyonce, who was jiggling on the Today Show that morning, would announce that Thierry Mugler would be designing the costumes for her upcoming Sasha Fierce tour.
