The 25 Best Fashion Editorials of 2011

It happens every year: Our ever-growing pile of fashion magazines inches higher with each passing month, and by the time December rolls around, we can barely sift through the hundreds of stylish images we bookmarked for inspiration. 2011 was no exception, and in a year that celebrated retro supermodels, androgyny, vivid colors, and plenty of experimentation in the beauty department, choosing our favorites was particularly difficult.

The best editorials of the year ran the gamut from huge ensemble casts of blue-chip models styled by greats like Katie Grand and Carine Roitfeld, to intimate, one-on-one portraits of our favorite girls like Lindsey Wixson and Daria Werbowy. The acid brights that dominated the spring collections allowed for some pretty trippy trend stories last season, but the fall glossies featured much moodier imagery, with a number of gorgeous spreads in black and white.

Here are the editorials from 2011 that will stay tacked up on our walls and fill our inspiration boards well into the new year—and beyond.

For Their 20th Anniversary, Dazed & Confused Let Old Cover Stars (Like Kate Moss and Pharrell) Pick New Ones

Dazed & Confused has just released four of the 20 covers they’ll be putting out for its 20th anniversary edition and, unsurprisingly, they are awesome. Pringle of Scotland Spring 2012: Art Meets the Archive

Monday was a good day for both clothes and celeb spotting at the London shows. While London front row faves Irina Lazareanu and Harley Viera-Newton chatted at Pringle of Scotland, Tilda Swinton quietly and gracefully swanned in and took her seat. She’s completely stunning, and rather unassuming in real life, posing for pictures then quietly sitting down. And tall! Pringle should have begged her to take to the runway for them.

Speaking of the runway, you’ll recall that Pringle has had some creative director upheaval. Clare Waight Keller went to Chloé early in the summer; this is Alistair Carr’s first collection for the label. For his first outing, he mined the 1960s and the Pringle archive, specifically riffing on the twinset.

Katie Grand, Sarah Burton, Tom Ford Among British Fashion Award Nominees

Katie Grand, Sarah Burton, Tom Ford Among British Fashion Award Nominees

The British Fashion Council has just announced the nominees for the 2011 British Fashion Awards, which are essentially the U.K.’s answer to our prestigious CFDA’s. The ceremony, which is scheduled for November 28, is meant to recognize the most influential people in fashion today and also promote the growth of British fashion.

With all the attention the U.K. has been getting lately for that stylish princess of theirs and being dubbed the “new fashion capital,” British fashion is definitely more relevant than ever this year. That may be why the BFC has decided to re-introduce the Red Carpet award, which “gives recognition to a British designer who is creating global awareness of their designs in the media.”

From Kim Jones to Stella McCartney to Erdem, here are all the nominees:

Fashionista’s FNO Guide #1: Where to Find the Celebrities

Fashionista’s FNO Guide #1: Where to Find the Celebrities

We can’t believe Fashion’s Night Out (and, thus, fashion week) is only a week away. As anyone who has ever been to a Fashion’s Night Out is probably aware, they pack enough events to fill an entire week into just a few hours, so pre-FNO planning is key. While Vogue‘s interactive map is quite handy, that is still a lot of stores to go through. So, we’re preparing a few of our own Fashion’s Night Out guides.

This one is for those of you who just want to see some famous people. We don’t blame you! Fashion’s Night Out offers rare opportunities to get up close and personal with real Hollywood stars. Maybe Tilda Swinton and Ne-Yo will become friends or Daniel Radcliffe will get wasted or Alexa Chung will debut a new haircut or Seth Meyers will screw up your drink or the Real Housewives of New York will be insane (that last one is the most likely)! Here’s our guide to where all your favorite celebs will be.

Tilda Swinton at Saks, Michael Kors in Bergdorf’s Windows and More: Here’s What You Can Expect at Fashion’s Night Out 2011

Fashion’s Night Out round three promises to be the biggest yet. Stores in over 250 cities across the US and overseas are scheduled to participate in the Vogue-helmed retail fest, and this year over 200 e-tailers will join in on the fun so those not living in or near a participating city can throw down plastic and score some deals too.

September 8 looms ever closer and Fashionsnightout.com has just unveiled a master list of events hosted by retailers across the country so you can start mapping out your shopping route now. (And we mean that literally–the site allows you to “add events” to your “night out” and plots them on a map.)

We scoured the listings for all the most important information: which celebrities have signed on and what they’ll be doing, the craziest gimmicks, and where all your favorite designers will be so you can stalk them show them some love.

Kate Middleton, the Obamas, Justin Timberlake and More Top Vanity Fair‘s 2011 International Best Dressed List

Vanity Fair has just released a preview of the 72nd installment of their famous annual International Best-Dressed List.

As usual, it’s a mixed bag of royals, financiers, socialites and entertainers. Yes, Kate Middleton, whose style we’ve been tracking since her royal engagement, makes her debut on the prestigious list as the Duchess of Cambridge (she’s listed as the wife of the future King of England). However, this isn’t her first time on the list–her inaugural appearance was in 2008.

There are a few other repeats–Carla Bruni-Sarkozy (no surprise there), Carey Mulligan (whom we love), Lady Gaga, who many people didn’t agree with last year, and Michelle Obama, who makes her fifth consecutive appearance–this time with President Obama as a best dressed couple. Another one of our faves, Tilda Swinton, made a well-deserved return to the list after a three-year hiatus. Musician and Lagerfeld muse Janelle Monae is an exciting newcomer and refreshing addition to list, which tends to disregard younger, edgier people.

As for the men, actor Colin Firth and actor/fashion designer Justin Timberlake make their debuts on the list. Firth’s role in A Single Man couldn’t have hurt his chances and it’s good to know that wearing a tragic denim suit to an awards show early in your career is something you can bounce back from. Click through for a sneak peek of the list.

Tilda Swinton Covers W, See Her Other Worldy 15-Page Editorial

This is one W cover we can get behind. W, like many glossies, has reported disappointing sales lately and while we’re not sure exactly what Tilda Swinton’s selling power is, we are always in support of her covering a magazine. Not to mention collaborating on a whole spread shot in Iceland with photographer Tim Walker. In “Planet Tilda,” up now on Wmagazine.com (along with a really cool video), the actress and Pringle of Scotland campaign star discusses how she got into fashion and her own style icons, which include David Bowie and her own father. She refers to the two of them as her “aesthetic North Stars,” and “the individuals with whom I share the same planetary DNA.” Read more here and check out the full spread below. It’s kind of insane.

Happy Independence Day! A Roundup of the Tackiest Celeb Flag Fashion

It’s the Fourth of July, and we’re lucky enough to live in a country that allows us the freedom to dress like total jackasses if we want to. Patriotic dressing never gets old and is a perennial favorite of celebs. The problem is that it rarely looks classy, and is almost always tacky. Probably because our flag is red, white, and blue with stars and stripes? That’s a lot going on for one outfit.

The ironic thing is that a lot of the celebs wearing the Stars and Stripes aren’t even from the US. (Hopefully they just think it’s cool, kinda how Americans think the Union Jack is cool.)

Click through for the most glorious sartorial abuses of our American flag, courtesy of many celebrities.
