Stefano Pilati Talks YSL (For the First Time Since Leaving) and What’s Next

In his first interview since showing his final collection for Yves Saint Laurent just four weeks ago, Stefano Pilati was the guest of honor at last night’s Fashion Talks at the French Institute Alliance Française (FIAF). He sat down with Pamela Golbin, Chief Curator of the Louvre’s Musée de la Mode et du Textile to chat about his career thus far and what might be next.

While the two skirted around the issue of what exactly led to Pilati’s somewhat sudden departure from YSL, and never mentioned his successor, Hedi Slimane, one got the impression that his time there was complicated and so is he, as a person.

Our Super Bowl Fashion Face-Off: Tom Brady vs. Eli Manning Off the Football Field

Our Super Bowl Fashion Face-Off: Tom Brady vs. Eli Manning Off the Football Field

Super Bowl XLVI is this Sunday, which will undoubtedly be the most watched television event of 2012. Unlike all the glam awards shows that have been invading our living rooms most recent Sunday nights, there’s no real fashion-spin we could put on the actual game. But because this is us, we couldn’t help but come up with something…

Enter our football fashion face-off between the two opposing team’s quarterbacks: The New York Giants’ Eli Manning v. he New England Patriots’ Tom Brady. We did a little investigating into their off-the-field style – from vintage yearbook photos, to down-time with the dogs. Football season may be coming to an end, but fashion is obviously timeless. And neither of these guys have always been winners on the fash-field.

Disclaimer: Tom may be Gisele’s baby-daddy, but that doesn’t make him the automatic winner. Click through to see if your pick on Sunday is also our pick for best-dressed.

When Great Mustaches Happen to Stylish People: We Give Fashion Peeps Movember Makeovers
Fashion Is Fun

When Great Mustaches Happen to Stylish People: We Give Fashion Peeps Movember Makeovers

If you’re feeling a little post-Halloween depression and no amount of fun-sized chocolate bars will cheer you up, here’s something that will: Movember is now upon us! That’s right, Movember – that magical month near the end of each year when mustaches sprout and flourish (or attempt to) on the faces of men everywhere, and bring joy to all who surround them. It’s like combining all the best holidays, plus your birthday, and making it last a full thirty days. It’s that unreal.

But it gets even better. Movember, sometimes called “Novembeard,” is actually a charitable endeavor, raising funds and awareness for cancers that affect men. Participants start with a clean-shaven face on November… erm, Movember 1st, and are sponsored by mustache admirers who want to see what they’ve got, facial-hair-wise. It’s your basic win/win situation.

Since we ladies aren’t physically able to participate in the growing/cultivating aspect of Movember, we thought it would be fun and pretty much necessary to imagine our favorite fashion figures in some legendary celebrity ‘stache styles. Then, with a little photoshop magic, we were able to make these mustache matches a reality. Can you really see Anna Wintour with anything but a pencil-thin mustache? And who would’ve thought a snowy Fu Manchu would seriously flatter Karl Lagerfeld? Take a look at the rest of our picks, and prepare to be mesmerized by some marvelous mustaches.

Ten Things We Learned From Nail Polish Guru Deborah Lippmann (Like Why She Names Her Polishes After Songs)

Last week HSN threw a big shindig to highlight a bunch of its beauty brands, and many of the entrepreneurs and personalities themselves were in attendance. We made a beeline for Deborah Lippmann and her glittering, pearly collection of tantalizing little nail polish bottles. She was kind enough to chat with us for quite a while, and here’s what we learned:

For the First Time Ever You Can Vote For Your Favorite Fragrance To Win a Fifi Award

The fragrance community can be a bit mysterious and closed off sometimes, and listening to perfume aficionados talk can be downright mystifying. But that doesn’t mean that we regular people don’t have very strong opinions about what we do and don’t want to smell like, even if we can’t identify a dry down note.

For the first time ever the FiFi awards, which is the fragrance equivalent of the Oscars, is awarding a Consumers’ Choice Award for Fragrance of the Year. In the past, industry insiders voted for the winners, which will still be the case this year in most categories. But in a nod to all of you who actually buy these scents, the Fragrance Foundation added the new consumer category.

Fashion News Roundup: Gianfranco Ferre Fires Its Creative Directors, Tom Ford Is In a Used Car Ad, and Karl Lagerfeld Is Making Bookish Perfume

Fashion News Roundup: Gianfranco Ferre Fires Its Creative Directors, Tom Ford Is In a Used Car Ad, and Karl Lagerfeld Is Making Bookish Perfume

Gianfranco Ferré Cleans House: Gianfranco Ferré’s new owners, Paris Group, sacked creative directors Tommaso Aquilano and Roberto Rimondi. No word yet on who the replacement(s) will be. An anonymous retailer told WWD that there wasn’t enough to buy and that evening wear was too “fairy-tale-like.” {WWD, subscription required}

Tom Ford Portrayed as a Frequently Driven Used Car: Boy, if Tom Ford was pissed that Mr.Porter employed some guy named Tom Ford to send emails, imagine how livid he’s going to be when he sees himself in Dale Wurfel’s used car ad. Ad copy: “You know you’re not the first, but do you really care?” Better hire a lawyer, Mr.Wurfel. {copyranter}

Karl Lagerfeld Is Making a Fragrance That Smells Like Books: Karl apparently loves books so much that he wants us to smell like one. His new fragrance, Paper Passion, will contain a “fatty nuance” that supposedly evokes paper. Definitely check out Bella Sugar’s slideshow showcasing the fact that Karl wasn’t the first one to think of the books-as-scent idea. {BellaSugar}

Fashionista’s Favorite Beauty Products

We spend a lot of time around the office discussing our favorite items, from shoes to bags to whatever look book happens to be around. Sometimes the best way to find a new product is to have a friend turn you on to it. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up all of our favorite beauty products, in no particular order.

Nars, MAC, and Clinique are popular in our office, and our beauty purchasing is very high/low, ranging from Tom Ford to Neutrogena from the drugstore. And like most women, we have some things to which we’re very loyal, and some that get transitioned in and out.

Click through to see our top picks, and tell us about your beloved products–we’re always looking for ideas.
