Michelle Obama‘s had a busy few days balancing family activities and official state visits–but obviously, she managed to dress the part perfectly for all of it.

New York is unreasonably cold right now. Like impending-blizzard-freeze-your-Rag & Bone-covered-butt-off cold. This is exactly why we, and fashionistas nowhere near New York, are praising the fashion gods (more like IMG & various PR people) for the glorious amount of New York fashion week shows livestreaming this week. We wrangled 89 shows (89!) and presentations to tune into over the course of the next week…with even more coming in! The best part? You won’t be judged for taking in these shows in your pjs over some popcorn or pizza or half a bottle of wine…

Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Brown Thursday–all the sales days associated with Thanksgiving are starting to blend together into one big giant shopping-fest. It feels like the anxiety of getting the best deals has replaced the anxiety of roasting the perfect bird (and having to chat with your drunk uncle).
Don’t worry–we’re here to help.
As a seasoned livestreamer, running home from school everyday (and sometimes during lunch period) to catch a show made me feel like I was sitting front row, but without the annoying crowds.
Each Fashion Week, you’ll have the high-concept thematic collections, the over-the-top sexed out ones and grungy downtown cool styles, but honestly, sometimes all I want to do is look at pretty, flattering pieces I know will make me feel good about myself. And that’s why I love me a Tracy Reese show (and why I go bananas at her sample sales).
“I wanted to do something bold and vibrant,” the designer told me backstage before the show. “Very confident and using color in a very optimistic way. We have a lot of gorgeous fabrics, amazing textures – playing with mixing those textures and layering in a lot of cool embellishments. The skirt lengths are shorter – I just feel [like a shorter hemline] seems more active and energetic. And I want the clothes to have a lot of energy and I think you’ll see that on the runway.”
Between heightened security, including a row of cop cars lining Columbus Street in front of Lincoln Center, and moments of silence to remember lives lost, the 10 year anniversary of September 11 was clearly at the forefront of everyone’s mind today. The shows still went on, so we caught up with fashion insiders and show-goers to find out how they were commemorating and coping with the fated day. Here’s how the fashion community and celebrities are responding to the tragedy:
Fern Mallis: “The first year we moved shows to London because nobody could cope with it. I canceled everything after Liz Lange’s show and was running around the tents telling people they had to clear the venue and stop what they were doing and tell people what happened. After the first season or two, we realized you can’t not go on. They win if we all stop doing everything that we do.”
Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, Lincoln Center’s Director of Fashion: “There was a moment of silence for each time the planes hit here at Lincoln Center and many designers have donated to the 9/11 fund. But it’s a big business for NYC so the show has to go on, but with vigilance and remembrance.”
After living here for a while, you sometimes forget how many amazing people live and work in New York City. When we walked into City Hall for the Fashion’s Night Out kick-off press conference today, we went through security with Lisa Mayock from Vena Cava.
Then, we saw Anna Wintour walking ahead of us and Alex Wang suddenly appeared behind us. A few minutes later Marc Jacobs, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez walked in. After we were seated inside the press conference room, the following people (in addition to the aforementioned) surrounded the podium: Prabal Gurung, Zac Posen, Phillip Lim, Tracy Reese, Kenneth Cole, Donna Karan, Carolina Herrera, Tommy Hilfiger, Thakoon Panichgul, Marcus Wainwright from Rag & Bone, Francisco Costa, Vera Wang, Tory Burch, Steven Kolb, Linda Fargo, the Mayor…and after a few moments, we noticed tiny Mary-Kate Olsen peeking her head out behind Marc.
Then, unfortunately, we died and are thus unable to report anything else about Fashion’s Night Out.
Just kidding – sort of.
As October comes to an end, there’s still lots going on in the fight against breast cancer. Designers such as Betsey Johnson, Donna Karan, Tory Burch, Prabal Gurung, Tracy Reese, Milly, Rachel Roy, Rebecca Taylor and Jill Stuart, have all teamed up with Sharpie to contribute to the fund-raising efforts. Our guesses were off, neither Wang nor Proenza are forging ahead with ad campaigns in these tough economic times – but Raf Simons is. His first ever ad, following the likes of Zac Posen, Rodarte and Derek Lam, will debut in magazines this fall and showcase his eponymous menswear line. He’ll also be opening two Read more →
To: Tips@Fashionista.com From: Girl@Anewmode.com A fun tip: I was at Tracy Reese yesterday and a few minutes before the show started Andre Leon Tally was being escorted from the backstage area. But by that time, all the front row seats were filled in, and even though the PR people assured him they had a seat Read more →
