Best Dressed: Paris Fashion Week

Friday, Oct 8, 2010 / 5:30 PM

It was tough to pick just five girls from Paris Fashion Week’s abundance of sartorial greatness, but we did our best. We have a hard time ever excluding Alexa Chung, who looked adorable at Miu Miu. Lou Doillon is a Paris fashion icon in her own right and did not disappoint at Chanel. Rachel Bilson looked lovely at Dior. Anja Rubik rocked long, flowy Chloé and Caroline Sieber got a head start on Spring’s white trend at Valentino.

Prepare for a Chanel-inspired stampede. This autumn, Saks Fifth Avenue will become the first major US retailer to stock plus-sized clothing from all of its high fashion brands.

Goods from Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Oscar de la Renta, Valentino, and yes, Chanel, will soon be available up to size 14, with some brands extending to size 20. And rather than being segregated into a different section, plus-sized garments will be displayed on the same rails as straight-sized stock on Saks’ high-end third floor.

It’s astonishing that something so obvious, lucrative and longed-for could take this long. The plus-size clothing sector is worth $27 billion globally, according to data from New York-based buying firm Global Purchasing Group.

That’s partly due to prevailing health trends, but also a result of increasingly arbitrary sizing—the US doesn’t have any clothing size regulations, so a woman who wears a size 8-10 at a mainstream store might find that McQueen thinks she’s a 12 or 14.

For the past sixteen years, Valentino has been engaged in litigation with a company called Florence Fashions over the use of the Valentino trademark.

On June 25th, DC-based intellectual property firm Rothwell, Figg, Ernst & Manbeck settled the case of Valentino U.S.A., Inc v. Florence Fashions (Jersey) Limited with the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB). The TTAB handed down the following judgment: “Valentino established priority of use and that a likelihood of confusion existed between the Valentino marks and Florence Fashions’ Giovanni Valentino and Gianni Valentino Marks.”

Confused? We were too. So we asked one of the lawyers from the firm that reps Valentino, Anne Sterba, to explain the case and the ruling.

Carey Mulligan’s printed Prada rocks our world. Diane Kruger always rocks our world. Jake Gyllenhaal looks sharp, everyone looks good in that Valentino collection and Gemma Arterton gives Roksanda Ilincic’s dress the red carpet turn it deserves.

“Are they screaming J.Lo,” asked the girl next to me. “God I hope not. I think they’re screaming ‘Let’s Go!’” We’re inside la Halle Freyssinet, a convention-like center on the outskirts of Paris for the Valentino show. And though everyone’s seated (it’s a small show, the first I’ve been to with no standing at all), [...]

It only took us a few days to figure out why Rachel Zoe was heading back to LA post-Milan instead of hopping on a flight to Paris: the Oscars are on Sunday. So we’ve picked out the dresses we want the nominees to wear–Best Actress & Best Supporting Actress–and ignored what they’ll probably wear, because [...]

Proenza Schouler’s major financial backers want out, reports WWD. London-based mergers and acquisitions firm Permira is said to be shopping around both Proenza and its other fashion brand: Valentino. In 2007, the Valentino Fashion Group–at that point already under Permira’s reign–bought a 45% stake (just $3.7 million) in Proenza. Given the potential of the Proenza [...]

If you have a body like Lara’s, you don’t cover it up. But since it’s not appropriate to be naked at your wedding, the next best thing is a corset. Giles celebrated curves and flesh with a spring show that offered up a number of these pieces. This dress was by far the most dramatic, and we think it would make just as great a statement coming down the aisle as it did the runway.” ?>

Lara doesn’t exactly seem like the type to wear a mock turtleneck, but with some sexy black lingerie underneath, this exquisite lace number could work.” ?>

We’re not sure whether Lara will go long or short, but if she’s leaning towards the latter, then this nude dress could be a beautiful and unconventional option.” ?>

Lara would look like a walking Calder in this dress. Perhaps she could wear this to the reception party–it would have so much movement when she dances!” ?>

Valentino accessories get knocked off right and left. Every shoe department is home to a beribboned heel and at this point, who hasn’t crossed a mock-rosette bag? But the Valentino couture braided tote, released almost two years ago, is more sophisticated than playful. It’s not for evening, it’s for everyday, ideal for an uptown girl [...]
