Karl Lagerfeld’s Kitten Choupette Celebrates Her First Birthday With Shrimp Cocktail, Obviously

Karl Lagerfeld‘s superstar kitten Choupette turned one yesterday. Can you believe it? To celebrate, Karl Lagerfeld tweeted a photo of Choupette dining on five shrimp arranged in a lovely pinwheel formation with a celebratory candle in the middle. It wasn’t lit, don’t worry–Karl wouldn’t risk burning Choupette’s beautiful perfect face. Also we’re sure Choupette’s maids Read more →

Hearst Fashion Titles Set September Issue Records–But How Will Condé Nast Fare?

We alread know the covers, but how thick are this year’s all-important September issues going to be?

Pretty thick. Just when we thought print was dying, magazines are seeing an increase in ad pages, especially in fashion and beauty. Things are looking particularly good for Hearst, whose relatively recent acquisition, Elle, will debut Hearst’s largest September issue of all time. The fashion title will have 400 ad pages (annoying for us, but good for publishing!), up 14% from last year.

Clearly Elle‘s doing well over at Hearst–this news comes on the heels of four consecutive record-breaking issues in terms of ad pages. Fellow Hearst titles Harper’s Bazaar and Marie Claire were not exempt from the fashion and beauty ad page increase: the former increased by 16.6% to 360 pages, while the latter went up 23% to 237 pages. It’s Marie Claire’s largest issue ever.

More Magazine Shakeups: Another Departure From Elle, and Alex White to Vogue?

Lately, the fashion industry has seemed like one big ever-revolving glass door–It feels like practically every day a new hire (or fire) is announced.

The latest shakeup involves Elle‘s senior fashion news editor Nick Axelrod, who is leaving the womens mag to join Emily Weiss at Into the Gloss. And, from the sounds of it, we can expect the beauty website to continue making more exciting new hires.

“ITG is growing and we are constantly experimenting, aiming to do something new,” Weiss told us. “I’ve always wanted ITG to be a resource and a destination that inspires readers with beauty stories, and to really give beauty the airtime it deserves–and maybe even turn it on its head a little bit.”

“I think Into The Gloss is one of those sites that perfectly fuses what I love about magazines and what’s so exciting about the web,” Axelrod said. “I started in print and I’ll always love print, but this just felt like the right next step for me. I wanted to do something entrepreneurial and with ITG, the possibilities of what we can do are endless.”

The National Magazine Awards Nominations Are Out: Vice Gets Its First Nom, Vogue Gets Snubbed

The American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) has just announced the finalists for the 2012 National Magazine Awards, and among the usual suspects (The New Yorker and New York), there were a few surprises.

For one, Vice received it’s first ASME nom, for General Excellence no less, alongside The New Yorker, New York, Bloomberg Businessweek and GQ in the General-Interest Magazine category, which is kind of the equivalent for getting nominated for “Best Picture” at the Oscars. It’s certainly a feat for the magazine which started out as an underground publication that prided itself on being anything but mainstream. We’d like to think it’s all thanks to the mag’s fascinating exploration of canine bondage, or their coverage of London fashion week on acid, but you know, that could be just us.

Also of note is that only two fashion titles–Glamour and W–got nods for General Excellence. W received more ASME nominations than any other fashion mag in 2011, and 2012′s list confirms that EIC Stefano Tonchi is indeed on a roll–much to the chagrin of competitor Vogue, no doubt.
