Diane Kruger in Thakoon, Tilda Swinton in Haider Ackermann and More
This week’s best dressed included a mix of veterans who can do no wrong (Tilda Swinton, Diane Kruger) and newcomers who keep getting better (Zoe Kravitz, Emilia Clarke).

File this one under collaborations we did not see coming. Has Lenny Kravtiz’s role as Hunger Games stylist Cinna turned him onto fashion design? The rockstar-cum-actor has, unbeknownst to us, designed a spring collection of stylish slip-ons for “one for one” footwear company Toms. According to Toms’ blog, Kravitz worked closely with founder Blaky Mycoskie Read more →
Singer, model, and general bad ass, Abbey Lee Kershaw is about to add yet another title to her already jampacked resume: Actress.
According to Australia’s Telegraph, Kershaw is set to make her acting debut in sci-fi action thriller Mad Max 4, alongside Charlize Theron, Tom Hardy and Zoe Kravitz.
The film is directed by George Miller, who also directed the past three movies in the series, and is set to start shooting in Namibia this month. Which means we may not be seeing too much of Abbey in the fashion world for a little while. Something we can expect to see her in, though, apparently is a cage.
It may be a little early in the season for this, but we’re going to go ahead and declare Erickson Beamon AW/12 the best presentation milieu of fashion month—yes, month. Hands down.
Allow us set the scene. For their first ready-to-wear collection, Karen Erickson and Vicki Beamon transported us back in time to the Prohibition Era by way of a swanky German speakeasy burlesque bar complete with cabaret café-style seating, flapper dancers, and live concerto music courtesy of The Citizens Band.
Equally racy yet reserved Anita Berber-inspired models sipped white wine and mingled amongst themselves whilst sensually swaying along with the upbeat jazz tunes, wearing sumptuous floor-length slip dresses and silky cocktail frocks in a lush, dark palette of onyx and bordeaux. And it wouldn’t be an Erickson Beamon soiree without utterly amazing jewelry—
Believe it or not, we are already nearing the end of 2011. So, before we prepare to embark on what will surely be a very stylish 2012, we decided to take a look back at some of 2011′s most stylish people and moments.
It wasn’t easy picking just 20, but we think the following ladies made the biggest impact and smartest choices this year. From starlets to musicians to editors, click through for who we believe to be the 20 best dressed gals of the year (and five of their best looks). Who do you think was this year’s best dressed?
Ever come across an old photo of your mom–you know, a photo from before you even existed–and thought, “Damn, my mom looks good” and then “OMG I want that whole outfit”?
Piper Weiss did, so she started a blog called My Mom the Style Icon where she posts photos of stylish moms that date from the 1920s through the 1980s, tells the stories of the moms in the photos, and offers up hilarious commentary on their outfits. That blog is now a book, and last night Coach threw a party to celebrate its release–just in time for mother’s day. (Seriously, buy it now for your mom).
True to her mom-style obsession, Weiss, who by day is an editor at Yahoo! Shine (you should read her stuff there because it’s hilarious), wore a vintage Pierre Cardin dress that was her mom’s in the 70s that she gave what she calls a “a shoulder pad-ectomy” and had shortened. Mama Weiss, the inspiration for the book, was there too, looking stylish as ever.
There are exceptions to every rule, but it seems style is more often than not passed down from mothers to child. So we brainstormed with Weiss to come up with the ten of the most fashionable mother and daughter pairs (and one mother-son pair), and she offered her two cents on each stylish duo. What other stylish mother daughter pairs did we leave off?
Zoe Kravitz is the new face of Vera Wang’s Preppy Princess fragrance, the star of Eleven Paris‘ spring campaign, and was the face of Alexander Wang’s T campaign last fall. But she’s not a model. Or at least, she doesn’t think of herself as one.
“I don’t consider myself to be a model at all,” Kravitz told Fashionista. “I actually get really uncomfortable at photo shoots.” Kravitz, who is currently shooting X-Men: First Class, says she’s an actress first. “When you’re acting you can hide behind a character,” she explains. “Doing a photo shoots make me nervous.” Luckily she says Bruce Weber, who shot her Vera Wang fragrance campaign, put her at ease.
And while Kravitz is BFF with Alexander Wang, she shies away from the fashion scene. Beyond Wang she can’t recall the names of designers she likes to wear while promoting her films on the red carpet, and isn’t keen on going to fashion shows (unless it’s Wang, of course), because, she says, “it’s become to a big to-do and I’m intimidated by all the flash bulbs.”

Naomi Makes Trouble, Again: This Thursday, Naomi Campbell will return to the courtroom, her home-away-from-home in recent years, to face Moodform Mission, a cosmetic firm started by her former agent Carole White. White’s lawyers are looking to dismiss Campbell’s countersuit, which claims White misrepresented her role in the company, and Moodform Mission is instead seeking $8 million in damages. {WWD, subscription required}
Success at Last for ANTM: For the first time in ages, America’s Next Model has spawned a model with whom the industry is actually interested. Cycle 15 winner Ann Ward’s first round of Polaroids for IMG are out, and a spread in Italian Vogue is next. Ragazza fortunata. {The Cut}
A few images of Zoe Kravitz and Max Motta for T by Alexander Wang surfaced last week, but we’ve got the full campaign. And we’re liking it. Click through to see the rest.
Today, we had the pleasure of spending lunch at an exclusive preview of the new W magazine lead by Stefano Tonchi. Tonchi walked us through a slideshow of the September issue and even sat down with us at the end for an intimate Q & A.
Also lots of fun was sitting at Lynn Hirschberg’s table, who, in between bites of salmon and sips of iced tea, discussed the aftermath of her infamous M.I.A. article, being an Emmy nominee and how much she liked the upcoming film “Social Network.” We felt super lucky to get to listen to such smart, likable people as Stefano and Lynn, whose obvious passion for W lead us to be very optimistic about the magazine’s future. A breakdown of the session:
Fact: There are few people cooler than Nico. So when the invites to Erin Fetherston read “Chelsea Girl” I jumped for joy; when Velvet Underground came on the soundtrack, a giant smile swept across my face. But something was missing from the ’60s Nico vibe I knew I was supposed to feel. Even with the Read more →
Billy Reid, who just won GQ’s best menswear designer last week, showed his AW10 collection atop a bed of leaves at Milk Studios last night. The room was packed, everyone angling for a view of his very handsome cast in perfectly tailored, well-styled clothes. On the way out, we rode the elevator with Karen Elson, Read more →
