It’s safe to say the magazine industry has had some ups and downs this year, as we reported yesterday, with more downs than publishers like Conde Nast and Hearst would probably like. Today, WWD took a closer look at what specifically may have contributed to those ups and downs for glossies like Vogue and Allure, Read more →
Ah, the Teen Choice Awards–where the attendees are (almost) all under the age of 25 (we feel old), the fashions are cutesy, and the awards are surfboards. We always love to see what the younger set is wearing to the show–and last night’s attendees did not disappoint–even if most of them wore the same short Read more →
We here at the Fashionista offices are pretty excited about the Emmy nominations, announced this morning, because there were so many of our obsessions in the mix (Mad Men! Game of Thrones! Schmidt!). And then of course, we can’t wait for the inevitable red carpet hits and misses.
We aren’t the only ones already thinking about Emmy night fashion. According to an interview with Vulture, Lena Dunham and real-life gal pal Zooey Deschanel are already plotting their nail art:
Emma Stone may have been the indisputable red carpet (and glossy cover) star of this week thanks to her Spiderman press tour, but a few other ladies managed to find some nice things to wear as well. From Diane Kruger in a delightfully sheer Alessandra Rich number to Zooey Deschanel in a not-so-adorkable red Oscar Read more →
For the second week in a row, we are amazed that any celebrities found clothes to wear outside of Cannes, but they did! Events for Calvin Klein, Stella McCartney and Coach drew particularly well-heeled crowds. At last night’s Billboard awards the stars brought the glam–and the fug–hard. The result was a red carpet that was as entertaining as it was varied.
Case in point: Miley Cyrus showed up wearing nothing but a tuxedo jacket–seriously–while Carrie Underwood sported a princess-y gown with a massive, tulle skirt. What’s more, the red carpet ushered in some memorable looks from stars, both new and old, we don’t get to see every day: Brandy showed up working a Tina Turner-esque look, while Carly Rae Jepsen landed herself on our ‘one to watch’ list with a nude floor-length gown.

With the Met exhibit just around the corner, we’re expecting to see a lot of celebrities in Prada. While it might be difficult to imagine some of those runway frocks on the red carpet (we don’t see dresses over pants as a go-to for celebrities), it doesn’t mean that the brand is without its fair share of red carpet moments through the years. Quite the opposite.
Prada is the seminal red carpet brand, in a way. The watershed moment in celebrity red carpet styling came in 1995 when Uma Thurman, styled by Barbara Tfank, wore a simple yet elegant lavendar gown to the Oscars (a.k.a. the dress that launched a thousand celebrity stylists’ careers). It was with this appearance that Prada became a household name overnight. The svelte actress was in a traceable gown from a brand to which people could aspire, instead of one provided by a film costumer or, heaven forbid, self-designed (we’re looking at you Demi Moore and Kim Basinger). It hit the high notes of 90s minimalism and became one of those capital “M” fashion Moments.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which took place Saturday night in DC, always makes for an interesting red carpet. The event is a strange mix of politicians, New York’s media power players, and celebrities from the A list on down to the D list. We’re talking President Obama and Kim Kardashian in the same room (“Why is she famous anyway?” Obama joked during his speech). And that makes for some very interesting fashion.
Take a look. And watch President Obama’s hilarious speech first. He’s so good.
