Blonde Takes a Backseat

Feb 29, 2008 @ 1:10pm

00230m.jpg Our favorite runway trends aren't usually about the clothes - instead they're subtle shifts that signify something social, something cultural, and something that almost everyone can do at home.

This season, it seems to be hair color, which has been dulled and deepened until yellow blondes and platinum blondes have all but vanished from the runways.

Some of this season's biggest newbies are Masha Tyelna, Ali Stephens, and Heloise Guerin - all with ashy brown hair. Meanwhile, Mariacarla Boscono seems to be making a major runway comeback, with hair restored back to its natural brown (two years ago, she reigned supreme on the runways with a brand new white-blonde bob).

Meanwhile, Jessica Stam, Tanya Dziahileva, and Karlie Kloss seem to have toned down their sunkissed streaks to match Abby Lee's chamomile tint, and the white-blonde girls among them - Agyness Deyn and Sasha Pivovarova - have crawled home sick.

Does this mean we can cancel our appointment at Bumble & Bumble, and grow everything out?

Jeremy Scott Doesn't Choose Sides

Feb 27, 2008 @ 1:41pm

Vague.jpg Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton may be feuding, but Jeremy Scott doesn't care.

The designer just styled Ms. Lohan for an upcoming issue of Paper Magazine, but despite his BFF status with the wrecked starlet, he's still showing Hilton some love:

Specifically, wearing the Paris-and-Cory-Kennedy tee shirt that Ksubi whipped up this year.

Thanks to Jacques for taking this photo in Paris, and let's muse for a moment on this oddness:

Last year, Paris was on Heatherette's t-shirts.

This season, she's representing a subversive Aussie clothing label.

Identity crisis, or just a need to be in every photo?

Ring Around the Rosie

Looks like the runways have taken a cue from Balenciaga's florals- they've blossomed even bigger at Marchesa, Blumarine, and Benjamin Cho for Fall. Now we have an urge to go home and watch the Secret Garden...

Taste the Rainbow

These looks from London's Armand Basi, Erdem, and Eley Kishimoto could have popped straight out of a Saturday morning cartoon. Or a Crayola box. The 64-ct. of course.

Girls in the Hoods

Feb 14, 2008 @ 2:52pm

hoodsies.jpg Yesterday at Giles, we spotted something jarring:

A series of beautiful girls with their heads swathed in sheer hoods that covered their faces.

Maybe it's just our constant paranoia, but the first thing we imagined was those Guantanamo Bay prisoners, and the second thing we referenced was Marc Jacobs, who covered Anna Mariya Usovskaya in a hood for his show last week.

Maybe this is what the designers want us to see - beauty compromised by the danger of a time when some literally want to kill you for wearing dresses and participating in a sexualized and highly Western sphere.

Or maybe they just don't want the women's beauty to get in the way of the clothes that women are supposed to want to make them beautiful.

As Natalie rather notoriously heard from the makeup artists backstage at Rodarte this season, "Don't make her too pretty, or they won't pay attention to the outfit."

At the time, the girl in the makeup chair was Karlie Kloss.

Florals: Already Dead?

Feb 13, 2008 @ 2:07pm

erinfetherstonAW08.jpgEach time a model pounded down the runway in something floral last week, Miranda Priestly was in our head, "Florals...for spring. Groundbreaking."

But these were for Fall, and they were everywhere: Erin Fetherston, Peter Som, Michael Kors, Sari Gueron and Derek Lam to name just a few.

The idea is appealing. On a disgusting rainy/slushy/snowy day like today, a purple floral mini would make the day a little more bearable.

But the truth is that we're already a little over the floral thing, and for most people, it's only just started. When we saw Anna in that yellow and blue-flowered skirt (a couple times) last week, we didn't think, "Oh, how pretty," (and it was!) We thought, "Oh, it's that Prada skirt. Again."

Maybe it's because we work in fashion, or maybe it's because we have the attention span of a six year-old, but we feel like florals (especially the Balenciaga kind,) have been dominating editorials for months, and so to just now see them on the street, we can't help but feel over it, and totally surprised (and bored) to see it again for Fall.

We're pretty sure we're still going to rock some cute floral dresses with gladiators in a couple months, but come October, we think we'll probably have moved on to stars or swirls or something in between.

Would you invest in key floral pieces for fall? Or will this trend never make it off the runways?

Hunters on the Prowl

Feb 12, 2008 @ 10:31am

HUNTINGTREND.jpgForget Mary-Kate, this season Band of Outsiders, Adam Lippes, Obedient Daughters, Derek Lam, and Preen are channeling Elmer Fudd. So you can show off your purple dresses at the Box but I'll be hunting wabbits in my long johns and duck boots. Shhhhh, be vewwwy, vewwwy quiet.

Medieval Times

Feb 11, 2008 @ 2:07pm

For Marchesa, Abaete and Erin Fetherston, the 20th century is so nine years ago, and it's time to party like its 1599. With Joan of Arc, Juliet, and Queen Elizabeth influencing fall collections, you may want to start practicing your best damsel in distress act - or at least rent the Claire Danes version of Romeo + Juliet and practice some hairstyles in the mirror.
