On the final day of Miami Swim Week (and in the midst of an oppressive New York City heatwave), swimwear continues to be at the forefront of the industry's mind. On Tuesday, Solid & Striped announced an expansion of its design team with a milestone hire: J.Crew alumna Michelle Copelman as design director, an entirely new role for the brand.
Copelman joins the high-end beachwear label from J.Crew and Crewcuts, where she spent six years as a designer — before which, according to LinkedIn, she was an intern at Polo Ralph Lauren and Marc by Marc Jacobs. In her new position, Copelman will supervise both the women's and men's design departments as the brand plans to add a slew of new products, categories and collaborations.
Solid & Striped confirmed to Fashionista that it has plans to enter the lifestyle arena with an expansive inventory that will include accessories of the bag, towel and hat varieties, as well as prospective footwear and eyewear collaborations.
Isaac Ross, founder of Solid & Striped, confirmed Copelman's appointment in a statement:
Michelle brings with her an incredible level of experience, as well as a fresh perspective. She has a strong understanding of our brand, our vision and our customer, and we are both eager to grow our product assortment, enter new categories and most importantly design collections that continue to excite our customers.
In June, Solid & Striped debuted an eight-piece capsule in partnership with model Hilary Rhoda and her fiancé, former NHL star Sean Avery. The brand also teamed up with Poppy Delevingne on a similar collaboration in 2014.
Just as many mid-and large-scale brands are downsizing operations and charting plummeting sales, it's heartening to see a label as buzzy as Solid & Striped going on to expand its lifestyle offerings. We look forward to watching what it has in store come spring 2016.
