The first snapshots from Gareth Pugh are finally posted, and with them comes this weird word association: shower curtain, King Tut, rave, horror movie. The last one is interesting because anytime I see a Gareth show, I think about a book by the theatre director Anne Bogart called Viewpoints. Bear with me here, because I think this is important: the first chapter of Anne's book talks about how theatre is the only safe space in which to scare people, and she thinks that provoking fear in people is one way to get them to think, reevaluate, and eventually, change. Anne thinks the theatre's responsibility is to scare the shit out of its audience in a safe, beautiful, productive way. Gareth Pugh used to be a costume designer for London's National Youth Theatre, and his designs are... well, they're definitely scary, in that Dark Crysytal / Labyrinth kind of way. So now here's the question: when you experience a Gareth Pugh creation, what are you thinking?
