When Jen Kao announced she'd present her debut collection in Ryan McGinley photos, the buzz was loud. After all, Mr. McGinley is an art star - and a certified hottie - whose fans include Karl Lagerfeld and Jessica Stam. Today's presentation had some clothes that lived up to the hype, and Ms. Kao proved that for her 24 years, she sure knows how to drape and shape (and probably would have won Project Runway, at least based on her impressively cool silk and cotton gowns). But though the clothes were lovely - and sellable, for sure - our favorite part of the presentation was when we asked Jen, "So, why did you get Ryan McGinley to shoot your Spring '08 collection?" And she said, "Well, he's a wonderful photographer, and I was really inspired by the W shoot he did with Kate Moss." We can't believe we got an honest and unpretentious answer so early during Fashion Week - most people would have been like, "Well, when I look at Mr. McGinley's early post-adolescent postmodernism..." Whatever. We love Jen, and we think she should send Kate Moss the glittery black top below - it's like aspirational TopShop.
