Perhaps one of the most scandalous fashion court cases came to close yesterday when a Superior Court judge in California sentenced designer Anand Jon Alexander to 59 years to life for sexual assault. He was found guilty back in November on 14 counts that included forcible rape. There have been many accusations thrown around post-trial, most vocally by the designer's sister who made claims of racism and jury tampering. But a new trial was not granted. And his sister is actually facing her own hearing on a contempt charge.
The prosecutors have always claimed that Anand Jon lured women he found online to his apartment with promises of modeling jobs. And many women did indeed testify during his trial. This darker underbelly of the fashion industry is one that has always frightened us and also casts a shadow over every opportunity that is legitimate. Even the judge said, "Mr. Alexander has showed no remorse for his actions," It's all just incredibly horrible and sad. We hope that the women involved in this case can finally find some peace.
