I can't tell you exactly how my obsession with shoes began (I SWEAR it has nothing to do with Sex and the City), but I can tell you the first time a pair really blew my mind.
A couple of years back, a friend of mine wore these Burberry studded platform sandals from the Fall 2007 runway. They were sexy, slightly tough, and managed to make even the simplest outfit chic. Even if I could have afforded to buy these beauties, they were completely sold out--probably due to the fact that editors and celebrities everywhere were spotted in them.
While I've never splurged on a pair of designer shoes, I've made a little promise to myself: When I land my first full-time job, I will treat myself to one...even if it takes a few months of saving. Although that day hasn't arrived, I've compiled a list of shoes that I think are worth the extreme price-tags. The picks might not all be classics, but they're so special that you'll surely wear them again and again.
PS: I still scour eBay every once in a while hoping to come across my Burberry dream shoes in a size 37.
YSL Tribute Sandals, $760 YSL.com
I don't think there is a fashion editor anywhere who doesn't have a pair of these. That might be a turnoff for some. The thing I love most about the Tributes is their versatility: I've seen them paired with tights (or even socks) in the winter and with jeans, as well as dresses. YSL produces them in different colorways every season, so if you're not into classic black or luggage, you can get a little funky with a bright or metallic.
Ann Demeulemeester Sandals, $689 Farfetch.com
Every season I fall in love with a pair of Ann D's. They're understated, but still a little edgy, and to top it off, they look so comfortable. This is a less obvious choice, because even though the designer is legendary, she's not as trendy, and is less known outside of fashion circles. If I were fortunate enough to have a pair of these, I would wear them everyday. With everything.
Christian Louboutin Platform Pumps, $865 Christianlouboutin.com
I once tried on a pair of Christian Louboutin platform peep-toes for fun with a few friends, and I had no idea that a pair of shoes was capable of making me feel so beautiful. They added a good five or six inches of height, and they made all of our legs look miles long. Lauren and I think that the nude pair shown here is the perfect investment shoe: Not only will it never go out of style, but it can truly be worn with anything.
Miu Miu Patent Leather Pumps, $570 Net-a-porter.com
A great pair of black pumps is a must for every woman, and I love this Miu Miu version. They're sweet, youthful, and could be worn just as easily to the office as they could with a party dress.
Chloe Lace-Up Wedge Boots, $895 Net-a-porter.com
I saw the Spring 2010 version of these all over town last Fashion Week, and I couldn't get enough. It's a great everyday option that will add a bit of Parisian-cool to any outfit. I'm seriously lusting after this suede pair for fall, created in the perfect shade of gray.
