Designers David Koma and Holly Fulton showed together for the second season in a row as part of Topshop's New Gen series, and they really are the perfect runway mates. Mostly because their collections are vastly different.
First, I must tell you that I sat next to Samantha Cameron--literally, right next to her. Yes, I'm in the pictures. I've included the one of me hiding--because it's the funniest. She just showed up and sat next to me. Can you imagine Michelle Obama doing that?
Whether Sam Cam--which is what I guess the British press call her--was there for David Koma or Holly Fulton, we'll never know, but the good news is both collections were quite strong.
David did lots of dots--cut-out, metallic, fur--and Holly did lots of everything, including a fantastic mod leather dress with a scoop back adorned in petals of patent leather, fur, and crystals. Swarovski sponsored Fulton's show yet again, and as I've said in the past, it's the most natural partnership. Holly would be using crystals even if she wasn't working with Swarovski, as her glitzy, art deco style requires sparkle. "She really has a passion for the material," several of the Swarovski people have said to me on separate occasions. Whether it was the chunky crystals delicately placed on the round little hats worn on the runway, or the paillettes designed to look like a city skyline, it works.
