With the royal wedding finally over, the fashion world moves on to the next big event on the fashion calendar: the Met Gala. The gala celebrates this year's Costume Institute exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, on view from May 4 through July 31. "Alexander McQueen was best known for his astonishing and extravagant runway presentations, which were given dramatic scenarios and narrative structures that suggested avant-garde installation and performance art," Andrew Bolton, Curator for the Costume Institute said in a release. "His fashions were an outlet for his emotions, an expression of the deepest, often darkest, aspects of his imagination. He was a true romantic in the Byronic sense of the word – he channeled the sublime." The exhibit celebrates the late designer's iconic work, featuring over 100 pieces of ready to wear from the McQueen archives, and approximately 70 accessories.
What we'll all have our eyes on though are the McQueens that walk the red carpet of the Met tonight for the gala, and the daring and lucky fashionistas that showcase the late designer's pieces (and creations by his successor/royal wedding designer Sarah Burton). In advance of tonight's fashion Oscars, here's our fantasy list of the 10 dresses we'd like to see walk the carpet, and who we'd like to see wear them.
Daphne Guiness Set to dress for the Met in Barneys' windows, these are the McQueens we would love to see Daphne Guiness wear- complete with headpiece. The craftsmanship and otherworldliness of these pieces are classic McQueen, and the silhouette is classic Guinness.
Anna Wintour We can't remember a Met Ball where Anna didn't wear a white or silver number by Chanel, but if is dares to McQueen it tonight, these silvery looks are perfect for her sophisticated style. (Update: She's wearing Chanel.)
Lady Gaga These feather creations, paired with super bold lips and feather caps, are sure to shine with Gaga's protuding facial bones. The outrageous shoulders, exquisite construction and intricate corsetry of these looks have Gaga written all over them.
Kate Moss One of Lee McQueen's muses, Kate is sure to choose a piece that showcases his genius as well as her relationship to the designer. Our money says Kate wears the dress designed for her hologram performance during McQueen's Fall 2006 collection, or another white ensemble from that year.
Anna Dello Russo Known for her impeccable taste and dedication to an entire look, ADR could rock either of these looks. The Fall 2008 piece celebrates her love of feathers and the frou-frou skirt, but the Spring 2007 look has more Italian flare and includes a headpiece formerly seen only on Diane Pernet. Whatever ADR chooses we know it will be over the top.
Sarah Jessica Parker SJP attended the Met Ball in 2006 as Lee McQueen's date, wearing a dress made out of his family's tartan. It would be quite symbolic and touching for SJP to rewear the dress, but we also love this feathery look from the fall 2008 collection for the petite star.
Blake Lively Blake is confirmed to be wearing Chanel and making her entrance with non other than Karl himself--but should she opt for a McQueen at the last minute--this is the gown that would show off the newly-ginger Gossip Girl to perfection.
Amanda Brooks The Barney's fashion director has a sporty-chic style that would be showcased perfectly in either of these cool McQueen looks.
Eva Mendes Let's face it: Eva Mendes is hot, and either of these red McQueen dresses will show off her incredible body while paying homage to the designer.
Grace Coddington Grace Coddington usually sports simple black to the Met Ball, but this seventies-inspired McQueen would look excellent with her frizzy red locks.
