Marquita Pring, a rising star in the modeling world (she's repped by Ford's stellar plus board), talked to WWD about her career and her future aspirations. She also offered a glimpse into the often eff'ed up and confusing world of plus size modeling. For example, she often has to pad her body to look bigger for certain jobs.
Here are some of her thoughts and experiences from the front lines:
-She's said this to us before in an interview, and says it again to WWD: she wants to do away with the term "plus size" and be labeled "curvy" if she must have a label other than just "model."
-The skinny girl world of modeling is cattier and more competitive. Because there are less curvy models than skinny ones, the group is more supportive (at least from her experience).
-At a size 12 to 14, Pring has been asked to pad her hips to actually look larger for a client. She's in the middle of the range of "desirable" plus sized models. Sometimes clients want an 8 or 10 sometimes a 14-16. An inch-wide piece of flat foam on each hip underneath hose does the trick, and is a common ploy.
-On the day of the Vogue Italia shoot, Marc Jacobs popped by for a surprise casting (she mentions that in the diary she kept for us of the shoot). Even Pring had no idea what it was for. Will we see a Marc Jacobs campaign or runway featuring curvy girls soon? Hope so. He dabbled a bit with curves at Louis Vuitton for fall 2010.
We've always been big fans of Marquita's and hope her career continues to skyrocket.
