Sitting behind Mandy Moore and Julianne Hough at Monique Lhuillier is several things. Blinding, of course, due to flashbulbs incessantly snapping the former pop star and Dancing With The Stars champion. A bit surprising, too: who knew Mandy Moore was that tall (runway model height, basically)? And last but not least, prophetic.
Six months from now, we're pretty sure both starlets will be dueling in a tabloid “Who Wore It Best?”, posing hand-on-hip in look number nine. "I love it," said Hough as the black, off-the-shoulder cocktail dress with leather side paneling slinked down the runway, and Moore nodded wide-eyed, eager.
Pre-show, Moore told us her everyday uniform was “blazers and jeans”, a pretty drastic departure from the looks she came to Lincoln Center to see. Unlike Moore, Monique Lhuillier is not a pants or menswear jacket type of girl. Instead, she makes red-carpet-ready sheaths and gowns dramatic enough to steal the tabloid spotlight.
Last season, Lhuillier rendered her elegant silhouettes in sassy leopard print, but this season, the designer nabbed sex appeal through leather and lace, which popped up in cap sleeves and side panels on brightly-colored frocks (magenta, cadmium yellow, cobalt blue). The result was ooh-ed and ahh-ed by Moore and Hough all show long, and though we were out of earshot from the other front row stars (Rose McGowan, Jamie Lynn Sigler, LeAnn Rimes), we’re guessing they approved, too. If not, there’s surely a long list of Hollywood girly-girls who’ll be quick to step into Lhuillier's latest collection; who wears it best remains to be seen.
