Might Tavi Gevinson be adding 'musician' to her growing list of professions? A few months ago, she recorded a video of herself covering Taylor Swift's "You Belong With Me" in goth makeup, which came across as a joke or some kind of satire, but her latest performance doesn't have the same feeling of irony.
In this video, which she posted on Hello Giggles yesterday, she sings "Case of You" by Joni Mitchell and even plays the guitar. She dedicates the performance to Mindy Kaling "because she mentioned the album this is on, Blue, a number of times in her book, which I LOVED, and wanted to thank her for birthing into this world," she writes. The video also gives you about four minutes to stare at her bedroom and extensive headband collection.
Of course, all teenagers have hobbies, but when you're Tavi and it's on the internet--even if she is only 15--it feels like something we're supposed to take seriously, which we have no problem doing because she sounds great. We're genuinely impressed.
She even has that whole red-hair-and-bags thing favored by female indie singers, so if that writer-editor gig doesn't work out, here is her backup career. Or she could do both and also become an actress and just be a miniature, more serious Zooey Deschanel.
