Ivanka Trump, you're fired! The socialite, Trump heiress, and businesswoman is accused of copying Derek Lam's covetable Ayami wedge. And from the looks of it he has a pretty open-and-shut case (see above). A Derek Lam shoe designer was shopping on Bloomingdales when they realized there was something oddly familiar about Ivanka Trump's Cadie wedge sandal, reports WWD. The shoe designer alerted Derek Lam CEO Jan-Hendrik Schlottman and the company quickly sent a cease-and-desist letter to Ivanka Trump Footwear and its licensee, Marc Fisher Footwear, yesterday. Trump now has seven business days to yank the offending wedge from all retailers.
“We have seen very similar copies before but we have never seen a shoe that perfectly copied,” Schlottmann told WWD. “It’s such an investment to make a shoe…we had to protest this.”
To make matters worse Trump's Cadie wedge is being sold for $150--a good $630 less than Lam's Ayami, which retails for $780. Needless to say, Lam's lawyers say that consumers will be confused by the near-identical shoes retailing at such different price points. They are asking that Trump not only pull the wedge, but also hand over any information regarding past and future sales of the shoe, including accounting records of all sales.
Schlottmann added, “I’m sure Ms. Trump doesn’t know her wedge is copy because it’s through a license.” It's true, like many celebrity "designers", we're willing to bet Ivanka has very little to do with her label's actual design process. But as it's her namesake, no doubt the socialite will want to take swift action to save her reputation. Which means Marc Fisher Footwear will probably soon be on the receiving end of her father's famous catchphrase: You're fired!
