Before noon on Tuesday, a queue of well-dressed and platform heeled women was quickly growing outside a chic Nolita storefront. No, it wasn’t for an an end-of-year sample sale--it was to meet stylist/fashion designer/reality star/editor and all around fashion obsession Rachel Zoe.
The always-glam Piperlime guest editor (love the side part, by the way) was on hand to show off her top holiday picks from the online retailer and take photos with the first 10 fans in line. Loyal viewers of the Rachel Zoe Project also got an extra treat since Zoe brought along her entire entourage including her husband and business partner Rodger Berman, Rachel Zoe Inc. VP Mandana Dayani and styling assistant/bestie Joey Malouf. (And no Jeremiah Brent…hmm…) Throughout the morning, she also gave away some of her selected pieces and a bunch of gift cards to those lucky enough to have the morning off work. So, with such a packed schedule of tasks, how does Zoe find the time to pick her recommendations? “It’s tough to edit it down because there is a lot,” she told us. “There is a lot of merchandise on Piperlime and there’s stuff in every category. So it’s really about picking what I see, what I love myself and what I would see my friends wearing and see my clients wearing and they just have such a broad range of stuff in different price points and different designers. It’s kind of tough to pick but you know just pick faves. Just gut, just gut.” Well, gut is serving her pretty well so far, but everyone is wondering how the new working mom manages to juggle her styling, designing her collection, taking care of Skyler, managing her team, and so on. “The truth is this girl behind me is a big part of it,” Rachel explained as she pointed toward Mandana. “And my husband and the team that I have are pretty extraordinary and I have a lot of help. I’m very hands-on and I’m very involved and I have the luxury--and I realize how blessed I am--of taking my son everywhere I go and that’s something that not all working moms have. I thank god I can do that everyday because leaving him is impossible. So I think it’s about taking him everywhere with me and he’s kind of like our little mascot now and he loves it and it makes him very adaptable and he’s happy wherever he is.”
We’ve heard before that little Skyler (or mom) doesn’t always pack so light when he travels. So when we caught a moment with a Missoni scarf rockin’ Rodger, we had to ask--how many suitcases did the Zoe-Berman family bring with them from Los Angeles? “I will tell you,” Rodge laughs. “We brought six checked bags and three shipped bags. Nine bags.” Uh, big ones? “Oh yeah, ginormous. But two of them are Skyler’s, in Rachel’s defense.” So how many were his? “Three,” he admits. “She only has four, I have three.” For those wondering about the future of the Rachel Zoe Report, the outlook isn’t so great, as Rodger told us that another season is “still unclear”. What? Come on, Bravo.
And what’s the deal with Joey and Jeremiah: did they really not get along or was that all for the dramz? “You’ll have to ask them,” Rodger hedges. Well, lucky for us Joey was hanging about with Mandana so we cornered him to ask if he still keeps in touch with ‘Miah. “Yes, I do,” he said after a pause. “Of course.” Nicely? “Um, you know it’s funny,” he explained. “I mean my relationship is it is what it is, it’s the same. I still talk to him the same.” Which lead into the subject of the much-buzzed about Rachel Zoe home line that Jeremiah is somehow, maybe, involved in.
“Nothing yet,” Rachel told us. “Right now we’re just spinning out different categories every season. Next is jewelry that I’ll launch for fall and then cold weather accessories - gloves, scarves, hats, belts, stuff like that - so, you know home eventually for sure. Beauty, fragrance, all of that. I don’t like to rule anything out because I love doing everything.” So will Jeremiah be involved? “He will be,” she cryptically said. “I mean for sure, if and when we do that, Jer will be involved for sure. But we’ll see.”
