The launch party for the much-anticipated Jason Wu for Target collaboration went down last night in Soho, and--much to our relief--instead of finding ourselves amidst the type of mass hysteria that surrounded the kick-off of that other Target collab, we found a charming Parisian wonderland - complete with street lights and Laduree macarons - populated with pretty major Hollywood actresses. “I think he’s fantastic and it’s awesome when designers do collaborations with Target,” said Shameless actress Emmy Rossum, who has a penchant for stocking up on their Mossimo t-shirts. “I love his spring collection with the pinks and the florals and I just think it’s exciting that he’s going to make it affordable.” All the starlets on the red carpet wore complete Jason Wu x Target outfits and infused the looks with their own personalities. Well, almost all of them (we’ll get to that in a sec). Rossum (who is looking more and more like Angelina Jolie’s younger sister these days) looked lovely in the sheer blush blouse matched with the black patterned skirt, Jaime King was doing the Southern (Blue) belle thing in a red cardie and blouse tucked into the blue pleated floral founcy skirt with a small woven straw purse slung on her shoulder (want that), and Chloe Moretz (sporting a super chic messy braided ‘do) looked adorable and age appropriate in the black ribbon tie blouse and black pleated skirt. “I started wearing his stuff a really long time ago, before the inauguration actually,” explained Hart of Dixie mean girl and former model Jaime King. “(It was) his very first collection and he invited me to his show and we kind of fell in love with each other and he’s like, ‘I really want to collaborate with you, I’d really love it if you could be my muse and if we can work together directly.'” “And that’s what we do,” she continued. “We email each other back and forth if I have an event and that’s how we figure out what would look good, what wouldn’t look good, that type of thing. I think he’s one of the most amazing young talents we have in fashion and I’m really, really proud of him.” The man of the hour was quite pleased with the whole project, too.
“It’s really exciting as an American designer to be following the footsteps of people like Alexander McQueen and Missoni,” Wu explained to us. “It’s really exciting for me to come out with a collection I really believe in. And I really love it. I think women are going to really enjoy it because it’s really wearable, it’s really feminine and it’s really nicely made--and those are those little qualities that I really embrace.” We're pretty excited for the launch, too, so we just had to ask if he secretly wanted to bring down the entire Target website Missoni-style on February 5. “Oh, I totally want to shut down the Target website,” Wu deadpanned. “What, are you kidding?” Not before we get our hands on that online-only pleated-front blue and white dress, please! Now that his collab is ready to launch, it’s down to crunch time before his Fall 2012 New York Fashion Week runway show. “I will be waking up tomorrow at 7:30am to get to work by 8am and I’ll be working for the next two weeks,” he said. “Straight up. Including weekends.” And while he wouldn’t give us any hints on what to expect for his upcoming collection (“no”), he did eventually give up one little tidbit as to who would be walking his runway, although it's not a complete shocker. “ Well, Karlie Kloss,” he admitted. “Of course, always.” And to conclude the evening, Blake Lively made a last minute red carpet appearance, kind of stealing Chloe Moretz’s thunder as her late arrival set off a firestorm of flashbulbs. Lively wore the Jason Wu x Target piped trench for like one hot second before stripping it off to reveal a white and black peplum-ed Jason Wu Spring 2012 main line dress.
