It's been a while since Julie Haus and Jason Alkire have shown at New York Fashion Week. The husband and wife duo hit the tents six years ago when they debuted Julie Haus' contemporary eponymous line. They returned to the tents this week to present their new designer line, Haus Alkire, for which they won an Ecco Domini fashion foundation award.
Haus and Alkire said showing this time around felt a lot less frantic--they even got 4 1/2 hours of sleep, which Alkire says, is a normal good night's sleep for him (eek). The sponsorships that came with the Ecco Domini win----from makeup to PR--helped a lot. But there was still a freak out before show time. "One of the models couldn't get her shoes on," Haus said. "It was a moment of full on panic--but that was the only moment we had."
As for the clothes, Haus Alkire focuses on prints, which Alkire creates using his own photography. "We started with the artist Luo Jie and then it took this turn toward Elsa Martinelli and this 1968 flick called The Belle Starr Story and she's an outlaw and she's a gambler and a murderer but you're rooting for her," Haus said. "She's the bad good guy." The collection, Haus said, was "merging the familiar idea of the West...with this more weird side."
Weird good (and not that weird, really). The abstract, dreamy digital photo prints were showcased on simple boxy tops (some of them sweatshirt--which I loved), pencil skirts, silk trousers and slinky dresses. There was a dark edge with black leather worked throughout--so perhaps there's the weird/Western bit.
And the collection already seems to have generated a positive buzz among buyers. "We have amazing appointments, we're really psyched," said Haus. "I think the whole Neiman Marcus team was here, we have Kirna Zabete, Louis Boston, we put up this dream list...so fingers crossed by they're all coming." Crossed tight!
